Gasperini adjusted tactically to avoid playing 3 primary attackers because they were too wide open at the back and tactically they had more then enough attack to beat teams like Valencia but needed more defending. Ilicic was playing and producing numbers second to only Messi so wasn't really droppable and Papu was undroppable and played a different profile. So Gasperini wasn't dropping Duvan for important games, he adjusting tactically to be pragmatic when they were giving up goals too much and had a guy in Ilicic who was at a level that was insane, and in those games Ilicic had tons of goals and assists. Duvan doesn't have the specialist level in any specific area aside from link up play but the overall combo of so many talents is extremely rare and valuable and his finishing is at a world class level comparably. *In the second game of the knockout Ilicic scored 4 goals and Atalanta still gave up 3, seems like it wasn't a case of Duvan being poor more of a player who can score 4 goals and dribbles, finishes, creates at levels per 90 close to Messi is un dropable.
Newcastle increase the offer by Duvan #Zapata, six-months loan deal with buy obligation of 40M€. The deal is getting closer and closer. 🇨🇴⚫️⚪️ #NUFC #Atalanta https://t.co/gbgCeVZipd— Pedro Almeida (@pedrogva6) January 21, 2022
Yeah, I saw the same this morning. Still a loan deal. Not sure that will work for Atalanta. Im not sure if you can sell/buy a % of a player in the UK (I believe it's outlawed there) but if I were Atalanta and needed to immediately replace Duvan in this window, I would insist on money upfront. It's a gamble otherwise.
No. Obligation is only triggered if they stay up. Otherwise the offer would be described as a purchase made with two installments. Hence the gamble - Atalanta already said they wouldn't accept those terms for sensible reasons. Newcastle is trying to manage their own payroll risks with that structure but you can see why it would be less attractive to a seller with a thin squad.
I doubt they THINK they will either but it's risk management. Given how rich the owners are I am surprised they are trying to be precious about it, but if they are going back with a loan + but on in summer they are. If you are Atalanta you then have to weigh your own risks and what you think you can sell Duvan for in July and make a call. For Duvan, he needs to take the payday if it appears when it does.
yeah I know but im not Atalanta. I think that Newcastle will sign a better forward in the summer. Duvan might be a short term fix
No, you are refering to an option, is different.. that the potential buyer is entitled to use the option or not. In obligatio they HAVE to pay when the condition happened...in this csse the condition is the expired of the loan Actually duvan arrived from sampdoria in this way Why they do? It have to do a lot of with faiir play issues
The specific coverage on the offer from Newcastle over past few days was that the obligation to buy would be triggered by the staying up. That was explicitly part of the rationale stated for Atalanta turning down the last offer. Cash flow and risk. Of course there are lots of ways they could offer and structure the loan. If they removed the trigger on staying up, this structure would still present a cash flow issue for Atalanta given the need to replace Duvan with someone in a Jan market where it's always tougher to find folks that teams will relinquish. Let's see once more of the details come out, but ostensibly this sounds like just more money layered on same structure.
Yes. We've both been saying that. Let's see if they find a way to get around the implied cash flow problems for Atalanta and if they have removed the trigger on the purchase when more details emerge. One would think these will be important factors.

It's all just conjecture without concrete news anyways, this stuff gets clicks and sells papers so outlets will jump on anything they can. Atalanta aren't even going to consider unless its money in the bank for sure, be it an obligation or up front and if they have someone lined up. For Duvan its hard to turn down that money, can't blame him at this stage, but Newcastle can get relegated the team is a mess and they're going to need to figure out a lot of stuff really quickly and land the right players to stay up.
