Italian scouting is failing. Doumbia could have been had last year for next to nothing. I suspect in one year time he’s going to already be worth 30-40 million and now he’s out of range of what these idiots can afford

He's really good. He better not be on the bench though because of Di Lorenzo. That would be a tragedy as I think he can be a future Azzurri RB.

It's staggering to me that Portuguese, Dutch, Germany teams etc scout and value our players more than our own clubs. Speechless.

I'm still seeing WAY TOO MANY young talents having to either play in Serie B or get picked off by foreign clubs who have real scouting.

It won't matter if we have Pep Guardiola on our bench if we keep doing this BS.

Btw...in case you haven't heard it before from me, Bastoni SUCKS as a defender. I can't stand his loose marking. He doesn't have the pace to be a LB so we have to stop with those pipe dreams.

He's a poor CB with great feet. The only way he works in a 4 man defense is if he has a STUD CB next to him to clean up his mess. (Leoni?)

I hope this underage prostitution investigation takes a while so we can try out other CBs.

Retegui shouldn't of started against Bosnia so that we would've lost 1-0 then. Retegui has a bad game vs N Ireland, and Pio had a bad game vs Bosnia. But ya, point the finger at Retegui.

Don't go blaming Pio for the Bosnia loss. The problem AS ALWAYS is that we do nothing to prep the young players for big moments. If they aren't getting prepped to play big moments on their club, and we don't even use them in FRIENDLIES or NATIONS LEAGUE....then how can we expect to trot Pio, Palestra, and Pisilli into a cauldron stadium in a do-or-die game?

I'll say it til I'm blue in the face. This is all about YOUTH. You have to prepare your youth. You have to give them chances. You have to allow them to make mistakes. You can't just throw them into the fire when you are desperate. That is poor planning and no vision (which our conazionali clearly have).

Yes that is a clear example. We are stuck in this pattern but now there is a generation wth talent and the league is losing them all just because the big clubs are not in the routine of going after Italians. We failed to mold talent and now the talent is just there and we are letting them all go abroad.

I never blamed Pio for the loss, just like I might be the only one who never blamed Bastoni for the loss either. And I agree with everything you said about our youth. I am just tired of the stupid notion that whereever a player plays will dictate his form when you had World Cup winners playing in the same area. When a player plays bad, people use that as an excuse. When they play good, you never hear crap. Retegui was having a good half vs Bosnia, if it wasn't for him we would've never scored a goal.

I can’t believe I have to say this, but yes it matters where you play. We need Italians playing on top teams. We need Italians playing against top teams for the biggest prizes in the sport. The champions league etc. Not the Saudi league, or the ********ing Qatar league. 3/4s of these leagues are filled with absolute nobodies. You’re not going to improve. You’re only going to stagnate. Theo was one of the best LBs in the world a couple of years ago. Now he has lost his starting spot on France to Digne and looks like half the player. You are free to connect the dots there. It is widely acknowledged by the pundits that Retegui looked off. He could have been playing CL with Atalanta but no, it’s better to score against farmers. It’s the same thing apparently.

And Bastoni had a very difficult year where he was exposed. Many people finally seeing this boy has a lot of deficiencies and things he needs to work on. But ******** it. Take the money and run.

Yes I feel bad for Portugal now Trincao is also going to Saudi.. they are destroying their golden generation with this. It matters a great deal. The biggest issue is there is no way to rate a player.
Ronaldo scores in Saudi and in qualifiers but is clearly cooked at the top level. If he was being benched in a real league the Portugal manager would be able to bench him too. it creates plausible deniability.

Bastoni is already on thin ice there would be no reason to even call him. He is not even proven in a back 4 to begin with.

    Hopefully!

See @Vieri#9? Isn't is good that Liberali chose Como instead of Milan as to not compete head to head with Comotto? Comotto's gonna take Zlatan's sons lunch money. Nepotism will only get you so far.

I love Sarri. He might be my favorite coach of all time. But he has always has the tendency to want to recycle players.

Great tweet here by journalist Luca Cerchione. Italian teams are getting outbid on all of their primary targets. Transfer dealings take weeks and it allows other clubs to hijack the deals. It shows the financial weakness of Serie A right now. It also shows how much the big teams are still stuck in the past where they think they can buy themselves a good team. Top Serie A clubs are still in denial.

    This is why you need:

    1. Ideas (coaching)
    2. Develop your own players
    3. Scout players before they explode

I agree with you. Mario Balotelli was interviewed by ex-NFL'er Chad Ochocinco (Chad Johnson) of all people recently and he was saying as much when asked about Italy.

TBF, current Spain might be an exception to the rule.

Yes even Barca do this well. We can't just go for the most hyped players after selling our most hyped players. You have to get these guys early. You just end up with teams full of guys with superstar attitudes without the superstar talent. Worst of both worlds.

Of course there’s going to be exceptions. A Spain or even a Portugal can afford to send 1 or 2 established players to Arabia. Italy cannot. We are in a talent crisis. We are a huge footballing nation that cannot produce players at the highest levels anymore. Bastoni has nothing to gain technically or tactically going to Saudi. It will do wonders for his finances but for fans of the Italian national team it does 0.

There’s a belief on this forum that a concept like “form” doesn’t exist. And that a player is measured by his FIFA card rating and that number is present wherever he goes.

Bastoni has played a lot of CL football and won Scudetti. He still sucks. Nothing is going to improve him because he loses his mark way too often. I honestly struggle on where I'd put him. He doesn't have enough pace to be a LB. He's poor in the middle marking. MAYBE he could be a CDM, but even that doesn't suit him. His ONLY chance at success would be having Cannavaro or Nesta next to him. So unless Leoni develops into that, Bastoni will struggle.

I hope he goes to Saudi Arabia to get away from the underage girl investigation. Then we could move on from him on the national team.
