Quote: "Now that D.C. United has pulled out, Frey said, some of that opposition will dissipate because a commercial enterprise is no longer involved in the use of public parkland." But what about the hoolies that surely will come out to youth soccer matches! On a more serious note, it has to be killing United that they can't recreate the facility they had at Redskin Park. Are there any other potentialities on the horizon Steven?
While not convenient to the staff and players who line in Fairfax Co., what about the Soccerplex in Germantown? From what I've read in the Post that place is losing money faster than a senior cit at a slot machine. A buy in by the team could help pay off their debt and the team would get a ready made facility. I've not seen inside the place and maybe they would need to expand to accomodate United but again, I would think cheaper than building a who complex. K
Some people equate Gaithersburg with Siberia, so I don't know where they'd place Germantown. Kamchatka? The Maryland folks may be restricted by contracts and covenants, but you're right about the money hemorrage. The locker and storage facilities aren't up to the needs of a Pro organization, and there's not much (front) office space constructed, either. With the area around there building up, if they're going to consider it, they'll have to move quickly. Otherwise, the NIMBYs will be in full throat. Not that I'd mind it in MY back yard! It's kind of quiet out here east of the Urals. dadman Soccerplex link: http://www.mdsoccerplex.com/
Nothing imminent. One possibility discussed is a training facility being built alongside a new stadium in RFK's lot 8A. In the meantime, it appears the team has to settle for the auxiliary field.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that for training purposes (putting aside the office space issue), the auxiliary field is not all that bad. It's easy to get to and the field isn't in terrible shape. I went to a Freedom exhibition thing there last February and it wasn't too bad.
I think housing all three pieces of United's facilities in one location makes a lot of sense. They could avoid match delays because the kit manager had to drive back to Virginny to get the change kits! I especially like the idea of a new stadium.
That is a great idea, isn't it? Wish I'd thought of it... Here's a real question...the DCUnited youth teams are having tryouts at the old (as in former Redskins/DC United) training facility. Anyone know whether this is just a one-off activity or whether there's something more long-term in the works?
Those fields aren't bad except that they have to share them with the Freedom and other area leagues and tournaments. I'm surprised to hear about tryouts at the old facility, I thought it was being turned into some Christian academy. K
You know,I meant to ask that the other day! Ever since the Cooke estate sold it to that church group, it kinda fell off the radar. But if they're having tryouts there (both on grass and turf) no renovation must've been done.
Has anyone been involved in a project to develop a decent soccer field? I find the county's estimation of a million per field outrageous, especially considering the land itself is gratis.
