Poor Luchi has to sit thru their interviews (many of the questions are from them) in the postgames. That said, the questions from other reporters are usually worse.

There are by now many reports in Argentinian press about the Hernán to Quakes deal. Just google Hernan Lopez Munoz and look in the News tab. But nothing in U.S. news. Some of the Argentinian reports are probably just reprints of basically the same article. But this one kind of stood out to me.

    https://urgente24.com/golazo-24/otr...mls-y-le-dejara-varios-millones-river-n575631

Basically, they said that Hernán was the star of Godoy Cruz (good to know), but why would he go to MLS when he could go to better leagues and then why SJ of all places - a "very minor team" in MLS (oof, the truth hurts!), and who very likely won't play Miami this year (so what's the point??). They did mention that we won a couple of championships in the early 2000s and even showed a photo of Quakes fans in the stands. And then it was "well I guess they are trying to get back on track" and "well at least he's joining a league with a lot of other good Argentinian players". They did mention Espinoza also, earlier in the article.

In the case of Hernan Munoz, maybe I'm missing something, but it appears the Quakes were after him for awhile, and he was among their first choices for the CAM slot, yet they had to wait for his club to bow out of their tournament, which only occurred recently. Also, they might have been dickering over price. The Quakes' lousy start probably forced them to sweeten the proposed deal or be left holding an empty bag to face mutinous fans.

    Just my uninformed take.

No, they were waiting on bigsoccer's verdict on the off-season. Once they learned of our displeasure, they decided to act.

Yes I’ve been thinking about the factors that could have put it over the line, if it did get over line. Besides the ones you mentioned it could also include CL reminding them that our window is about to close, at which point the offer is off the table. We could of course still pursue him in the summer but we would be presumably looking at other players as well and the offer might not be the same and BTW wouldn’t you like your $ now.

Sometimes the best negotiating tactic is just getting up and starting to walk away from the table, like being in a store in a place where bartering is the norm, and suddenly the price gets better as you start walking out the door. Luchi said a few days ago that he didn’t expect any new additions to the roster any time soon, though he might have been playing coy.

I think you probably nailed the two biggest points, Godoy Cruz being eliminated from the tournament and the Quakes being desperate... It's also possible that the Quakes didn't have to sweeten the deal further because the Argentine economy is so bad that their offer in US dollars is a lot more valuable today than it was two months ago.

Yep and as I said with the window closing CL could have reminded them that the offer is expiring very soon and wouldn’t you like your money now.

Is he back-of-jersey Lopez or Munoz?

Apologies for my ignorance of naming conventions.

Maybe my next customized kit will have “Don G” on the back. You know, in honor of MLS. :)

Isn’t there other factors besides a signed contract that the Quakes have to ensure before they announce he can join the team? Like make sure he can obtain a work visa for MLS, pass a physical, ect. I can understand the team wanting everything in order before they get the fan base all excited.

He did have his own separate little birdie, who had not spoken to the Bogert-birdie.
