Well, this may cause some drama in the media... but it's actually a smart answer by Donadoni. Basically, he's trying to an end to all of the Totti/Azzurri talk. And he's aslo putting the ball in Totti's court regarding the issue. And Totti has said numerous times that he will not play for the NT until September. So I hope this puts a stop to the constant Totti talk for a while.

It doesn't mean Donadoni hates Totti now... I think it's his way of dodging the constant attention the subject is getting. He'll talk about Totti when he's wearing an Azzurri jersey & that's that.

Totti's worth on the national team level is highly overrated. His only contribution to the world cup winning side was the penalty, and he was greatly disappointing for the other several games he was featured in.

well, he had a good game versus ukraine, played well as a sub in the limited time he had versus australia (plus the pk of course), and even versus germany I felt that he played pretty decent, but the france game, after the 120 minute endeavor in the summer heat and humidity in dortmubd, he was dead from the start versus france, I was glad he got pulled off. I still want one healthy tournament if possible, especially if he has a good season next year. 2004 and 2006 didn't go to well individually for varying reasons, though of course, 2006 ended up nice

    Good answer

It's hard to tell with an article though, could've been said laughingly as a joke

Clearly it was a joke, he's tired of people asking him about Totti in every single interview he gives.

yeah, i wouldn't read too much into this. there is nothing new to say, but he keeps getting asked the same question over and over again. so he had a little fun kidding with the press. that is all. I doubt donadoni has been chasing totti all along and now, all of a sudden out of the blue, he will not pursue him when he gets his screws out.

Totti could stay at Roma... we could find someone else to do what he does for the National team.... he doesn't respect the flag on his jersey and the 4th star he helped put on that jersey then he shouldn't deserve to be on the team! Stay at Roma and keep playing for the Coppa Italia year after year after year because it sure as hell deosn't look like that team could win either scudetto or CH League! We saw what happened there a fwe weeks ago !

^^^ a true # 10. who do we have that can play that role as effectively as a healthy totti?

not having totti, we just have to run different formations that fit the players we have. donadoni did a good job using the 4-2-3-1 and not relying on an advanced playmaker, but letting all three behind plus some support from de rossi share the reaponsibilities of feeding toni, and then oddo and zambrotta pushed up the flanks, and crossed tot he target man. good system for the players we have, but without totti the only true #10s we have are cassano and del piero, ones old, the other a nutcase. we don't have a slew of true 10s (unless you want to put pirlo back there, but that would be retarded imho).

not saying we need totti or anything, as we can certainly win without him, but we don't have #10s at the moment who can do what he can do, imo.

Hopefully that response from Doandoni is legitimate. Totti is outrageously gifted but he has this "ROMA FOREVER AND FUCK THE REST!" mentality. He may have talent but he hasn't got the heart to play for the Azzurri. He made his contributions in Germany but he'll be 32 at the time the Euro is on and fulfill his full potential for Italy at that age. It's time to give Quagliarella and Rosina the chance to play for the Azzurri. If you want to see Totti at his best, you have to watch him play for the Roma in the Serie A. The CL and the NT are places where he won't be at top flight, it's as simple as that.

I think in the CL Totti puts in excellent performances and has put in some great performances in the CL before.

With the National Team it isn't that he didn't give it his all, because in qualifiers over the years Totti has put in some good performances and has provided countless assists for our strikers. It's just that when he gets to the big stage (barring Euro 2000) he doesn't shine as brightly.

Maybe in the first round matches but from the second round onwards, he hasn't been very impressive.

For all you Totti bashers, will you also bash Nesta is he retires? He's said to be considering it because he claims there are just too many fixtures to play. Which without him saying it is really putting AC Milan before his country?

^^^ did he say that in an interview, link?

there are too many fixtures imo. I wish serie a would go back to 18 teams, and I wouldn't mind 16 teams, plus smaller groups for euro and world cup qualifying, which would reduce the amount of games there. there is no excuse for a player having to play 55-60 matches in a year. ridiculous.

    Ancelotti: Bring back Sheva!

It's at the very bottom of the article. It's really the same exact thing as Totti's situation, except less blown out of proportion.
