Hey Toronto fans, i just watched the highlights of you guys slicing up Chicago, and i gotta give a big kudos to you!! TWO THUMBS UP...WAY UP I also watch highlights of your last week's game versus KC as well and I just LOVE the atmosphere you guys brought to the game.. The stadium is packed with a see of RED...cheering, screaming, and i thought i even heard SINGIN'???? I hope you guys can keep up with the support for your club, because if you do, it would surely be the model that all other MLS franchises should look up to. And let me tell you what, if a I was a soccer player in the MLS, I would love to have the opportunity to play in front of you guys. No disrespect to other club's supporters, but I am just AMAZED at the game atmosphere at Toronto right now.
I heard a whole lot of Fire songs and chants for the first 60 minutes or so on TV. The TFC fans weren't nearly as loud as 17K+ could be.
Ummm.. you watched it on FoxSports then? I think FSC tele-miked Section 8 On CBC i couldn't really hear any Chicago.
That was because of where FSC had their mic's placed. I watched the CBC on CBUT (and switched between there and FSC) and on the CBC feed you could clearly hear the home side was louder and could barely hear any chicago songs. This again goes to show that so much of 'atmosphere' and 'noise' is down to mic placement inside a stadium and mic levels on the broadcast. (one of my complaints about the ESPN production is they don't allow the atmosphere to breathe, nor do they place mics near the most vocal support or have them at a decent level.). That said, props to Toronto for beating Chicago (anyone who does that gets props) and showing the Dallas's and Kansas City's of the league what a real atmosphere is all about.
Obviously. Little hard to get Canadian television in LA. (unless there is some satellite package that offers it that I don't know about) There is still certain to be bleed thru when it's 17K+ v. 300 away supporters though no? (the answer to that is: Yes) Watch highlights on MLSnet it's a morgue from a TFC standpoint until 2 seconds before a true goal scoring opportunity. You hear the Section 8 traveling support banging the drums the whole time. Sure it sounds good when it's 17K+ cheer when a goal is scored and credit for them for showing up (at least til the last 10 minutes when the stands were starting to look barren), but c'mon, let's not go overboard fellating fans for coming out for the new team in town. I recall RSL getting an s'load of support their first year and that has faded to a degree. I'll be truly impressed in year 2 and 3. They are off to a good start.
Bitter. The crowd was far and away the best in MLS regular season history and this is a team that had yet to score a goal up to that point. I also saw hardly any empty seats with 10 minutes to go and at about a half hour after the game BMO field still looked to be a third full. The few Chicago fans who must have made the trip were non-existant on the CBC broadcast.
Bitter? How is me acknowledging that you(?)/they are off to a good start being bitter? I'm simply not willing to fellate a fanbase of a team that is less than 10 games old. Every expansion team has had great turnouts and vocal support for at least half a season. Toronto enjoying the same is no different than RSL and Chivas from a few years ago. **re: item in bold above**Very bold, and very debatable statement. so was the swath of empty seats visible on camera with 10 minutes left the fault of FSC's camera placement as well? CBC must have all the best production techniques. I'll say again; if/when Toronto tanks horribly this year, and start next year poorly and they still pack the stadium and all the rest I'll give them full credit. For now I reserve any "greatest fans ever" tags for teams who've been doing it for a while
Have you bothered to take a look at MLS regular season attendance figures through the years? What are you basing this on? Even if you only look at this season, LA Galaxy is topping the league in attendance right now (24k+ per game average).
Seat Cushion Night! Everyone duck. You Toronto fans are pretty good. I was impressed. "all we are saying, is give us a goal." I thought that was a funny song. Now, if you can get your coaches and management to be as classy as you guys are, you might get some respect. It will never be forgotten what you guys did to a fellow Canadian named Adrian Serioux. You out to be ashamed.
It was the best display of atmosphere for MLS on TV. Period. Simply put, Bretos had it right: Toronto has raised the bar. Even great fans like the DC gang got knocked down a peg yesterday-and that's not a knock on DC or some of the other really good fanbases in the league. Yesterday looked liked football from another country-er...I guess it was, wasn't it Let's go Yanks, we gotta get busy.
exactly..... TFC in another level... and DC is a rung below, which is saying ALOT! But overall, MLS is slowly getting the atmosphere right, I think it's growing slowly, just as the league is.. which thankfully the owners are on a slow growth plan, as opposed to the 20K attendance drones who want it all today, including huge tv numbers..... best part of the TFC game for me personally is seeing the Fire lose.. anytime the Fire lose it's a good thing, at least for me!
With good reason. If they put microphones near the DC supporters' groups, for instance, they'd have the FCC all over them for 'f^ck you ref' and the lyrics to 'If I had the wings of an eagle' and 'We're all part of Tommy's Army' That said, I was just wowed by the Toronto crowd. Their stadium has no 'quiet side'. I wish I knew how we could get that to spread to other MLS crowds. And, yes, even to mine.
I must admit, you guys are unbelievable. Keep up the good work. Just don't sing about having sex with the referee's sister and you will stay above DCU. Just don't sing too loud on Wednesday against my boys.
Sorry, but that is completely untrue. I was AT the match, not in the supporters section, in fact directly opposite from the Fire Fans. There were a few times I heard them (like them singing "you only sing when you're winning" just before we put another one in the net, shutting them up for most of the game) but the majority of the time all I could hear was the Toronto crowd. The crowd got louder on opportunities sure, but there was never a "quiet" moment, that would be mic placement I assume.
After watching the joy and hysteria that was the second TFC home match, I can truly say for the very first time that I am jealous of MLS, and wish my team were in that league.
i hope that seat cushion tossing thing becomes some kind of tradition... even if it's only against the Fire or something.... that was awesome.
Toronto is not Salt Lake City, Utah. As has been repeated, over and over, these are different fans. These arent the soccer moms, and youth teams, and familys looking for cheap entertainment. They are soccer fans. The cultural makeup and ethnic diversity of Salt Lake City is simply not comparable to Toronto. Salt Lake is 80% 'White' with a metro population of just under 1.5 million. Toronto is 42% visible minorities (so were not talking white-europeans even) and has a metro population of 5 million + There is not comparison between the two cities.
Dude, it is not all what you think it is. Look at KC...i wouldn't want to be LIKE them even though they are in MLS..
Exactly. When i lived in rochester and went over the border to toronto, i saw alot of people of different heritages there. Some people need to get their facts straight, huh.. Other than that, TFC has the feel of the english cola league team. Not surprised at all there.
The shots of the seat cushions being tossed on the pitch should be used as PR bait for the networks. The intensity of that game was beyond belief, including the guy that got hauled off for running onto the field. What cracks me up is that American football on its best day in the playoffs is nowhere near as intense as what Toronto's fans displayed. Well done, Toronto! You did us proud! Welcome aboard!
