Toronto Away Game on Aug 15th

peace bridge leads to the QEW (queen Elizabeth Way) at the southern part of ontario......the rainbow bridge meets up with the QEW at KM 30.....take the rainbow, NOT the peace bridge, ESP coming back into the states on sunday, it will take an hour+
the last one is way out of the way and usually not as crazy as the peace bridge, but still you get all the trucks and people headed back to NYC and east.

 

The QEW is the Queen Elizabeth Way.

 

Hm, from the map, the last one doesn't look any further out of the way than the Rainbow bridge (you end up in the same place, and travel about the same distance to get there); but if the wait is similar to the Peace bridge, then it's a no-brainer to take the Rainbow bridge.

Man it creeps me out to keep referring to the Rainbow bridge. Couldn't they have called it something else?

 

So when you cross over the Rainbow Bridge, do you see Baldur or the spirits of your long lost pets?

 

yeah I know what you mean.....btw the view going across that is insane also as you see both falls....esp in the winter when its mostly frozen

 

So, what if you're flying into Buffalo at 9:45pm...Still think the Peace Bridge and QEW will be slower? Not that I'd mind the diversion to the Drivable Arc Named For Refracted Light, since we'll be coming back that way on Monday...

 

at 1030 at night, I dont think it will be a big issue, but they do light the falls at night time for a while, so I would go through that colored thing.

 

so if im leaving the DC area at midnight and getting up to the border around 8am ish would the QEW be backed up already, forcing me to take the:

Hey everyone .. just happened to come across this board and though I may offer up some help.. I live just outside of Oakville which is kinda dead smack inbetween Toronto and Hamilton .. Im not sure what day most of you are headed up but like some of your previous poster mentioned you'll want to definatley avoid the QEW during rush hours (about 7:45am-9:30am in the morn and 4 pm to 6:30/7ish in the evening) through Hamilton, Burlington,Oakville and into Toronto ... Especially if you guys are headed up on a friday as it can get VERY backed up. Once you guys get thorugh the niagra and st. catherins areas and into Hamilton/Burlington you guys may want to hop on the 407 and shoot across it into the city. Its much much faster. Now the 407 is a toll HWY but dosent actually have any toll booths .. It snaps a picture of your plater when you get and when you get off and they mail u the toll... being that your guys will all be driving vehicles with out of Ontario plates i dont think you'll get billed... but im not positive! its a pretty small charge anyway...

If your driving outside of rush hours then the QEW is your best bet .. its the most direct way from where your comming from into downtown Toronto .. the QEW eventually turns into the Gardiner Express Way and that will shoot you right by BMO Field, Rogers Ceneter/CN Tower and into the downtown core

And lastley if you want a really quick traffic update just tune the dial to AM 680 news ... they do traffic reports for Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area like every 10 mins that way u can plan accordingly

Any recommendations on places in DC to buy Canadian currency? I used to just use Canadian ATMs or my credit card there but the charges doing that have gotten ridiculous.

 

There's a Thomas Cook at 1800 K St. NW. There's an AmEx travel office at 1501 K St. NW.

 

Your bank might be able to do it as well, depending on how large it is. The smaller credit unions probably won't do it but the larger chains might.

 

also if you have bank of america, you can use any scotia bank atm for a 1% fee. just call up BoA and tell em you are going to be using your card in canada so they dont report it as stolen and put a freeze on it.

 

anybody know about the rules PNC has? can i use my debit card or should i just get the cash out before I leave??

PAY ATTENTION TO HIS POST FOLKS: Call your banks and let them now you are traveling out of the US. I just called Wachovia/Wells Fargo. The agent made the notation on my account and assurred me that had I not done this, they would have frozen my account.

 

yah guys i had them freeze my account while i was in greece and let me tell you.. being in a foreign country with no access to your bank account is NOT fun!

also while i am acting like your mother do not forget your passports!

AAA locations sell Canadian currency as well, in fixed amounts. They did it for Euros for us with a decent exchange rate.
