On today's "Inside Soccer" show, Brian Quinn said that he had heard from the grapevine that the new DM has weeded down the number of candidates from the original 15-20 to a final three. He said that they are.... (drum roll please!)

*** Jay Hoffman, former Breaker coach

*** Mitch Murray, former Santa Clara University Men's coach

Actually I know on absolute authority that the list is not correct. Presher has his guy and is bring him and only him in for a final interview. There was a female in his final 3. Some say final 2. I do not feel it is my place to reveal this as I believe personnel decisions are confidential. Just know this is 100% accurate info.

    9-30-02 Union-Tribune article

The article, by Mark Zeigler, is in this morning's paper, but not on their internet site. It is entitled "Spirit's search for new coach reportedly turns toward da Luz." It cites the "Inside Soccer" show from Saturday. And Zeigler says that "da Luz is the most intriguing choice" and "according to one WUSA source, the most coveted candidate by new Spirit general manager Dave Presher."

One thing it does add is that Tony da Luz was asked in a phone call about this - and he said "I really don't have any comment. I think it's just because of my past affiliation with USD and me coming from San Diego."

  8. I hope your infor definitely is correct, runbabyrun, because that suggests that we may be getting things rollin'. I am sick of this waiting...we are losing precious time in preparing for the '03 Season. I, like everyone else (and more than likely, the team), would like to see some results in all these "daredevil" moves that SD has been making the past year. We're performing like the Clippers when we have the means to be the Lakers.

    Here you go: http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/soccer/20020930-9999_1s30soccer.html

    I guess I'll ask...

What does he bring to the program that makes him head and shoulders above the other candidates? Is it his San Diego connections? I am not familiar with the Wake Forest program...does he use a certain style of soccer that would be great for the Spirit?

Hmmmm ..... seems like SD have not learned from their PR [Crow's] gaffes of prematurely announcing coaching candidates.

One thing that could hold up an announcement (if it is daLuz) is that he is in the middle of his college season. That puts Wake Forest in a dilemna as well as the Spirit. Does he leave Wake immediately or do they hold off until the college season is over on the announcement/move. Just a thought. Still, it hurts Wake on the recruiting front severely.

I didn't see this posted anywhere either

I guess he just confirmed my earlier report that the 3 finalists were inaccurate. They honestly are the foreigner he referred to, daLuz, and a female. You can take that to the bank.

I think we'd all like to get our coach in place...so we can start!! Its ludacris to think we still do not have a coach in place!! daLuz sounds promising and the games Ive seen Wake Forrest play is very attractive game of soccer and technical. Who are the other 2 canidates that he speaks of...whos the foreinger and the female?

In a sidebar to the main article in the "Goal!" featue on page D2, Mark Zeigler has this...

    ***

    Getting Closer

The Spirit's coaching search is still chugging along, but the end appears to be in sight. General Manager Dave Presher is believed to have finished interviewing candidates, including meeting last weekend with Wake Forest women's coach Tony da Luz during the Demon Deacons' swing through Northern California. Da Luz, who started the USD women's program in 1992, refused to confirm his candidacy when the Union-Tribune contacted him on Sept. 29, but he has since changed his tune. He told Soccer America last week that [he] has indeed been talking with the Spirit and "there would have to be a big family meeting" if the Spirit extends an offer. Da Luz is considered to by soccer insiders to be the front-runner, along with former Santa Clara men's coach Mitch Murray.

    ***

Nothing really different, and it doesn't acknowledge the foreign coach mentioned in the SA newsletter excerpt that Fear posted...

This from the idjit that publicized phone numbers for a WUSA team press official (and still owes me $$$ for beer). :(

I don't know where or when you tried to speak with him, however, over the course of two years I have never found Hoffman to be anything less than a complete professional at impromptu interviews after a practice, at the postgame press conferences, and at public events for the Breakers.

Maybe he should have been more of a prick. To paraphrase an old saying, "Nice guys finish in sixth place." ;)

Alright guys and gals, no need to call anyone names. Let's keep it on point.

And the point is, THE SPIRIT CAN'T FIND A FREAKIN' COACH!!

I say we hire Lab99 with Tsunami as first assistant.

here's a fd up idea that may be crazy enough to work...Julie foudy; player coach

she pretty much ran the team under crow, has tremendous player respect, is very physcally demanding of her teammates and has long been known as a field marshall...and shes getting on in years as a player, it would be a good way for her to run out her 80k contract and have the spirit milk every penny out of it...besides that i think shed be a very good coach, great leader with alot of thought to the game, and she could definatly run the business side of the game...just ask USSF.

Why not Fawcett? She is the one that coached at UCLA for several years. As far as I know...Foudy has no real official coaching experience whatsoever.

    That's Presher's gig.

Yeah right. After being rejected by their top 4 candidates, how hard can it be for the 5th candidate to say "yes"?

Were it not for the brilliant off-season trades, SD would be the joke of the league.

I feel bad for the players. Maybe it was a mistake to go after college coaches. Why leave a relatively secure job for WUSA? That's why you don't see the best women's college basketball coaches going for the WNBA. Of course the WNBA is doing pretty well now but if you lose at that level you get fired a lot quicker.
