I wasn't a super-fan of the original Top Gun (despite my love of airplanes), but I became really excited after seeing this preview trailer. It perfectly hit the nostalgia area of my heart without touching the very sensitive "they don't get it" areas all around it. And the aircraft footage is fantastic. While the first movie emphasized straight line speed and some European fighter movies emphasize thoroughbred twichiness, I like how this features the powerful pointability of the aircraft. Cruise was either in the back seat of a F/A-18F pretending to fly or he was face-swapped onto a pilot in a F/A-18E, or there's a crazy amount of CGI going on, and I'm hoping it's the first. I think I have to see this in a theatre. I will start saving now.
Not feeling the nostalgia, but it may just be me. Enjoyed/Loved the first movie and even went to Miramar in the 80s to see an airshow (friends lived in SD at the time). It will be interesting to see how this plays with the younger crowd.
I do wonder how this will work in terms of the narrative. Very few movies of that era will have been so dated in terms of their ideas as "Top Gun". Unless they lean into the camp, which might mean they will navigate into self-parody.
I think the muted color palette and the jaded and disillusioned feel of the one dialogue scene point out the right way to handle this.
I haven't been to see a movie at the theater in almost two years, but Mrs. Ismitje and I watched the trailer and then planned a date to see this when it comes out.
Apparently, Maverick (Tom Cruise) is now the flight instructor and one of the pilots he's currently training is Goose's son. -G
Sweet ! I predict blockbuster numbers from this film for sure. And I am stretching it too much if I say possible Oscar buzz for Tom Cruise as best actor? Lol, let's just wait and see.
