I am Portuguese and I voted Andrade...and still think Andrade is better then Carvalho... Even on his BAD days he could still scare the hell out of any offence.
In my opinion it's either Marquez or Rezaei. So i'll toss a coin and deside who to vote for............
Yes i must admit, Mexico has always been known for their excellent defense (which does include their keeper, of course), but is Portugal known for having a very good defense? Honest question here , i really don't know. I'm not doubting Portugal's top defenseman or anything here.
I have seen Carvalho (Portugals best defender) play and I admit he is pretty decent, but he isn't as good as Marquez or Rezai for that matter. To be honest I don't know quite a lot more about Portugals defense other than that.
You can argue either way between Marquez and Andrade, both are world class defenders. As far as Rahman Rezaei, he should not be underestimated either as he has been the most fearsome defender in all of Asia for several years now. He has also made several appearances on the Serie A "Team of the Week". I have watched him completely shut down some top strikers such as Juventus' Ibrahimovic in matches throughout the year. He rejected several offers from other Serie A teams earlier this year including Fiorentina to stay in Messina, where he felt at home.
I want everyone who has posted thus far to neg rep me after the world cup if Carlos Salcido is not the most talked about defender at the end of the championship between Marquez, Carvalho, and Andrade. He's gonna explode onto the world scene. He has impecabble techinique, innate defensive character, and physical properties sprinters dream of.
I think it's safe to say that Rezaei is currently among the best defenders of Calcio A, definately top 10 if not top 5. He has never played less than 90 minutes, and makes the team of the week quite often. I know Marquez and Andrade are also world class so it's very hard to decide.
I feel embarassed to hear so many good things about Rezaei and not having been able to watch him enough to have an opinion. I'll try to catch some Messina matches during the rest of the season. I also hope I can watch some of the upcoming ANC to check out Angola (and others).

It's great you guys can form opinions without ever seeing players play... Remarkable... Either Andrade or Carvalho are the best defenders enough said...the track record for both players proves it...Carvalho plays on arguably the best back four in the EPL and Andrade was voted best defender it what most consider the best league in the World... Don't give me defenders from second rate teams as the best...
i think he is stating that carvalho and andrade are holding there own in there respective clubs. barcelona are a great team but with ronaldinho on the team really what are the chances.
I'll be completely shocked, if Carvalho and Andrade won't be the leading vote getters by the time this poll closes!
