Another example of this for sure. Did you see Messi or Ronaldinho Gaucho playing against the weakest teams in the Spanish Championship, dribbling, shooting and dodging every week in the spanish league, that is it , 38 rounds plus Champions League... for example,Ferenc Puskas only has images against England... West Germany .. FRankfurt .. Nice .. But not the entire games against the weakest teams in the Spanish or Hungarian Championship in that time... so Puskas has several sombreros and nutmegs in these games .. We have to take this into consideration too . ! For Justice with all players around the World !

................. the best dribblers of 80's ... of course Diego Armando Maradona(1) firstly for sure ...

    .............. But later ...
I see several players even though they are dribblers of the same Carat, weight, level or level.... certainly several players even in the 80s.

    .....
certainly among them is Ruud Gullit, yes in my football vision for sure !

I'll have an attempt at it mate (considering players who arguably also peaked as players or dribblers during the 1970s or 1990s if they were probably good enough in dribbling in the 80s too). For sure your other comments are interesting and you have a fair point about disparity in footage between older and newer players.

    Diego Maradona
Michael Laudrup (better as player but probably not dribbler in 90s)
Roberto Baggio (better as player but probably not dribbler in 90s)
Brian Laudrup (better as player and slightly as dribbler in 90s too I think)
    Pierre Littbarski
Johan Cruyff (better as player, although not in every aspect, and as dribbler too in 60s and 70s)
Paulo Futre (possibly better as dribbler in 90s, even as player maybe in terms of peak, but I'm a bit unsure on this one)
Dejan Savicevic (better as player in 90s, and probably as dribbler too to an extent)
Safet Susic (possibly better as dribbler and/or overall player at end of 70s)
Zico (better as dribbler in 70s; close call as overall player but perhaps not)

A couple of other contenders that come to mind (I guess I could name a few others in theory but I'll leave it at 2 more to make a dozen names, even if I didn't think in detail about whether any others might go above them if I included more): John Barnes, Roger Milla....

Donadoni has a very good number of World Cup dribbles indeed (it can be to some extent that his style, like Garrincha's but to a lesser extent, involves some multi-dribbles on the same player when twisting and turning on the wing of course, and he doesn't have so much in the way of fluent dribbling through the centre of the pitch to set himself or others up for shots that way I don't think for example compared to some other players, but for sure he's a good candidate in general too).

Even though his World Cups were in the 90s I do think I'd have him somewhere in the mix among 80s dribblers anyway too though yeah....

I think the Gullit goal at 0:34 on the top video is probably going to be from this game vs his old club Haarlem (but I could be wrong about it):

They went bankrupt after the 2008 financial crash. There are some quite strict bankruptcy laws over here. With limited space for restarts.

I think there have been too many professional clubs in Holland (the region). It's an area already captured by Telstar, AZ and Ajax. Telstar offers something the other two do not.

The local pride is the oldest club of the country and the one that founded football here: HFC. It has delivered many (recent) administrators. The city has also a footing in cricket and rugby.
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koninklijke_HFC
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_of_Pioneers

It's also a question to what extent the capital and governing center of the province is really different from Amsterdam (located to the right). Nearby Zandvoort (to the left) is occasionally named 'Amsterdam beach'.

Key demographic indicators are very similar to Amsterdam (as opposed to The Hague, Rotterdam) and electoral makeup is similar too. This was different in some previous decades (where Amsterdam had the port, some industry and Haarlem the bureaucrats, lawyers etc.). It is a bit of a 'posh' city if I might say. Btw, since the 1980s troubled port cities Rotterdam and Antwerp are becoming gentrified too (with likewise electoral developments and decline for populists). It is now just a part of the wider Amsterdam metropolitan area.

Reinaldo once played for Telstar - he says this was because of Cruijff (you can understand, hear his comments I think).

So yes, the club does not exist any more.

Ah yes, Puck made this video indeed I see (showing the dribble-goal from the start, as well as another goal and an assist):
Gullit Haarlem 84 - video Dailymotion
Maybe I did watch it before, but I don't remember exactly which videos (except some I'm sure about) I watched on Puck's channel now...but it's quite a lot of them for sure!

I was watching this complete match between Yugoslavia versus Holland in 1990 friendly match preparing to the World Cup in 1990.. Honestly I thought it was a very good game even watching it both teams played well for sure... Dejan Savicevic Susic.. Jugovic.. etc... for the Netherlands they did well in this match I've seen the goalkeeper Van Breukelen... Rijkaard... Ruud Gullit... Marco van Basten... Honestly, Ruud Gullit tried 5 dribbles and completed 5 dribbles in this match. Ruud Gullit provided a pre-assist for Rijkaard's goal... and Marco van Basten a goal and an assist in this match.. It really was a great game to watch ever . Great game for sure ...

    Rijkaard 1 goal .... and 1 assist to Van Basten's goal !

Yeah, I know about the game and saw some highlights and compilations about it. It's a bit strange maybe because I think both Savicevic and Gullit had some 'fitness/recovery' issues but both had pretty good games that day, moreso than in the actual World Cup (when I guess the fitness issues were still present).

Gullit did one bigger cover to save the Holland from Dejan Savicevic's goal and was a great save by Van Breukelen too !! in this lance into the game ...in 1990 .!

It had many reasons and underlying circumstances (Gullit his injury was one of many), and there is a certain reputation for organizations in general, but you can argue the 1990 WC must count as the biggest failure in history. In terms of the player material you had, the pre-tournament ranking and odds, the coaching staff etc. Gullit had actually a decent goal against Ireland and MvB a solid assist against Egypt (and PK won vs Germany). SofaScore has MvB as MOTM against Egypt and Gullit almost MOTM against Ireland (just behind Quinn).

OPTA has Oranje for 2024 as sixth most likely to win (in part because of playing France in the group stage and possibly a tough route early in the KO), with the injuries for FDJ and Koopmeiners and squad changes factored in. I suppose such model for 1990 must be quite a bit higher? I also say again a combined Netherlands+Flanders team (not that I want this) had stood a much better chance at various points in time. 6-7 million extra people could make a huge difference I believe.

Last two years we had a net migration of 220k people each year (on 17.9 million in total) and 400k both years gross migration, so who knows what that will mean over time.

Looked a bit further now (even if I am familiar with the area). Certainly interesting stuff why some go bankrupt and others thrive!

    - There is heavy competition from other sports there. Other than aforementioned cricket and rugby, also a prominent speed skating track, a prominent field hockey team, track & field, baseball (NED is one of the best European countries in baseball, together with Italy). With already the only 'Royal' football club of the country, it is tough to survive. Royal HFC had indeed often higher attendances than HFC Haarlem, in the first decade of this century (Gullit's club).

    - Something like this shows it is somewhat leaning to Ajax. Other sources (like this and this) have it down to 'neutral' or Telstar/AZ leaning. Hard to tell. Many clubs are 'fighting' for the same pie. Something has to give way.

    - Little surprise it is a 'posh' city. Neighboring municipality Heemstede (where Johan Neeskens grew up) ranks 6th of the country in percentage (18.5%) of millionaire households (27000 inhabitants). Also neighboring is Bloemendaal (23000 inhabitants) and that ranks #1 of the country, 30% is millionaire. Bloemendaal translates literally into something like 'Flower cover' in English and Heemstede = Hempstead.

    - Amsterdam-Haarlem-Bloemendaal often set policies at odds with the rest of the country, or refuse to enforce it - in tandem and in cooperation with each other. For some reason Bloemendaal and Heemstede are both relatively left-liberal (Bloemendaal: at 75% turnout there is 36% for the former communists and everything to the left of them; the right-populists are stuck at 6th/7th). Haarlem is the first city in the world to ban meat advertisements - if you can call that 'liberal'. This confirms my idea Haarlem is now just an extension of Amsterdam, or the other way around. The oldest railway line went from Haarlem to Amsterdam; the whole network started from there. And makes it harder to survive when there is also Ajax.

Who makes this list? Aguero on this but not for example Robben? (one of the most prolific dribblers in Euro and WC history) Really?

    Also noticed this:
    https://football-ratings.blogspot.com/2023/03/netherlands-ratings-in-2022-world-cup.html?m=1

    And this for Milan 1990-91:
    https://football-ratings.blogspot.com/2023/03/le-pagelle-del-milan-199091.html?m=1

MvB still fairly high despite not scoring a lot but of course he did have a good number of assists and Milan had much worse results in the games he missed.

Probably just because of receiving a rep today (thanks William Whitehall), but I thought I'd amend this a little re: the 2020s now (not to say I wouldn't be uncertain about other decades too, especially the 1930s and maybe even moreso somehow the 1940s, in terms of picking the 5 players).

I think I'd probably put Wirtz in 1st and Musiala in 2nd for the 2020s at this point (in the Euros opener the reasons being more evident for Musiala than Wirtz though as it happens). Probably Mbappe still in, either above or below Mitoma. Then for 5th, suddenly, rather than picking between Rodrygo and Pedri, maybe I'm inclined to think it could be Kenan Yildiz potentially! I don't see enough outside of the Premier League and Euros/World Cup nowadays really to be fair, but strangely maybe if looking at Sofascore's stats (though what is or isn't a dribble might be borderline sometimes I guess) I did get the impression Yildiz could be an excellent dribbler last night, and then looking at this that seems correct evidently:

I don't feel like Wirtz or Musiala would be troubling the overall top 5 list at this point, but whether that could be totally ruled out for the future I suppose I couldn't be sure....

    EDIT
Looking at Yildiz's wider Sofascore profile, it does seem like if extrapolating his per 90 minutes dribbling stats to match how many minutes he's been playing at this time in his career on average, he'd have significant dribbling stats. Anyway, for me he played well overall yesterday too, moreso than his Sofascore rating suggests (not to say "I'm always right or close to right" and fall into that trap lol, but sometimes I feel like a traditional media rating would pick up on nuances the stats-system isn't designed to, including perhaps initiating that chance Turkey had in the 2nd half with a potential pre-assist after some ball skills, while sometimes the stats-systems reflect things more because the journalists might miss or forget things or get caught up in the narrative that the winning team deserves better marks all round perhaps - obviously I guess without the marginal offside call Yildiz's Sofascore score from yesterday's game would be higher somewhat too, thought that's more of a moot point since it was offside).
