I think Barthez has the misfortune of being remembered for a period of errors at Manchester United that effectively "erased" him from the spotlight when he was 33 or 34.

It's true that he was very talented and I've seen him have some great moments with Marseille, Monaco, and the French national team. Certainly, he had some great moments with France, but, to be honest, it seems to me a bit of a stretch to suggest he could be among the top 3-5 goalkeepers in the history of national teams. I also get the feeling (having witnessed it firsthand) that he was never a dominant enough goalkeeper to be considered #1 in the world, but rather that he was part of a group of the best for a time and that bar may be a bit high for the 41 goalkeepers previously considered (I've had similar thoughts about Zubizarreta, Köpke or Júlio César, believing that the Brazilian reached a higher peak than Casillas himself in his prime, but of shorter duration and with fewer iconic episodes).

By the way, I must say that the exercise got a bit out of hand because my system for creating a preliminary list of candidates resulted in 1773 players—a huge number!

I've been thinking about how to present them here for your feedback because such a long list can become meaningless at a certain point or difficult to analyze. Perhaps I could organize them by nationality and position simultaneously to highlight all those I considered from the 1950s onward.

Of course, there's Barthez, but also everyone from Bernard Lama to one of my favorite undergrounds: Sébastien Frey.

When looking at statistics -gpg and clean sheets- and achievements, saying he's among the top 3-5 GKs doesn't seem unreasonable.

It had to be that way, since the newspaper "El Mundo Deportivo" published the ranking of the top 10 on August 31, 1993.

Yes, true, I remember that was it (at least for that year/season - potentially for some early ones it could be based on calendar year I guess - for example the 1988 voting, said to be done after the continental awards were decided, for the main award,; so potentially was also for goalkeepers):
    IFFHS
"In 1988, IFFHS decided to create an official poll for the WORLD’S BEST FOOTBALLER each year, taking as a base the top footballer voted on each continent (Europe, Africa, South America, CONCACAF) some weeks previously. To that end, it was necessary to institute a vote for the best footballer in Asia and Oceania, which do not exist at that time.IFFHS did it for Asia and Oceania. Then the top placed players from the continents became candidates for the World poll, the IFFHS organised that and held the first of these polls towards the end of 1988 with partners and sponsors."

In my humble opinion, Amancio was better than Butragueño. In Butragueño's era, the sheer number of stars was certainly much smaller than the number of stars Amancio played alongside. Both geniuses, both inconsistent, but I believe Amancio is a step above Butragueño, despite the great moments "the Vulture" gave us as a footballer, and the humanity, modesty, respect, and sportsmanship he demonstrated and continues to demonstrate.

I suppose choosing between Amancio and Butragueño is a matter of taste; they were both great players.

In my opinion, the level of football Butragueño reached at his age hasn't been matched by any other Spanish player in history until the arrival of Lamine Yamal (Lamine stood out even younger than Emilio).

That peak performance of "El Buitre" was incredibly high: two bronze balls, two Bravo trophies, that World Cup in Mexico… all great memories, and unforgettable for those of us who were 8 or 9 years old at the time.

Butragueño's problem is that he was a player who stopped dazzling quite young and entered a decline early on (if we exclude the season in which he was the league's top scorer, 1990-91, he never returned to his peak form).

I haven't seen Amancio play live, but I have the feeling that despite being inconsistent, as @Titanlux says, he was less so than Butragueño and also had high peaks in performance, certainly not as high as Butragueño's, but still very important.

We also can't forget that Amancio was decisive in Real Madrid's 1966 European Cup victory and in the 1964 European Championship (his goal in the semi-finals put us in the final), two tournaments that Butragueño couldn't win despite being a great player. And Amancio was also a renowned player in his time, winning a bronze ball.

Anyway, as I said at the beginning, I think putting Butragueño ahead of Amancio is perfectly normal, just as putting Amancio first is perfectly normal.

A few years ago, on this same forum, I made a short ranking of the best Real Madrid players of the 20th century, and I placed Amancio above Butragueño. This was my list:

    https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/b...-real-madrid-cf.2001848/page-21#post-41176078

    1- Alfredo di Stefano
    2- Paco Gento
    3- Ferenc Puskas
    4- Jose Martinez "Pirri"
    5- Amancio Amaro
    6- Jose Emilio Santamaria
    7- Fernando Hierro

From here I have many doubts but it could be something like this:

    8- Ricardo Zamora
    9- Hugo Sanchez

    10-12 Butragueno, Michel, Camacho
13-17 Sanchís Jr, Rial, Stielike, Santillana, Kopa
(Kopa is in this block because he only played three seasons at Real Madrid, if he had played more he would be much higher).
18-22 Quincoces, Buyo, Juanito, Zoco, Redondo

(I did not include Roberto Carlos and Raúl on the list because their careers spanned both centuries.)

Amancio and Pirri are, in my opinion, the most important Real Madrid players between 1965 and 1980, and they perfectly link the Real Madrid of Di Stéfano with that of the Quinta del Buitre.

By the way, football-wise, I grew up with the Quinta del Buitre; they're the ones who made me a Real Madrid fan, and for me, they're the generation that defined my childhood. I'd say that, for me, the player who performed best during those years was Míchel, not with the same peak form as Butragueño, but much more consistent. In some lists circulating online, and even on this forum, Míchel appears as the Real Madrid player with the most assists in history, which I think is no coincidence, given his magnificent right foot and the fact that he spent so many years at the club. Sanchís Jr. was also very consistent and ultimately had the reward of winning two Champions League titles, something neither Butragueño nor Míchel were able to achieve.

It is not my intention to create controversy, far from it, simply to offer another opinion and I repeat, although I put Amancio in first place I perfectly understand that others may put Butragueño.

Honestly, I only saw Amancio play towards the end of his career, while I've seen Butragueño countless times, both with Real Madrid and the Spanish national team. I've seen Butragueño do some wonderful things. I would highlight Butragueño's flair, imagination, intelligence, and improvisation. I think Amancio wasn't lacking in any of those aspects, but his physical condition was clearly superior to Butragueño's.
Amancio's speed was clearly greater than Butragueño's. He had better dribbling skills, and his crosses were magnificent. He covered more ground and participated more in the team's play.
Amancio was a player with character and a lot of effort. Although he's usually considered a winger, he was really more of an inside forward, who liked to start from deep and, when necessary, pressed the opposition, helping out defensively. In contrast, Butragueño roamed around areas very close to the penalty area, where he tried to outmaneuver his opponents, as if he were on a chessboard. He conserved his energy, waiting for the right moment when a moment of brilliance could decide the game.

Amancio's individual and team achievements were also slightly better than those of "The Vulture."

I'm sure Amancio was better than Butragueño, without taking anything away from the latter. I would like, if possible, for a great Real Madrid fan like @Buyo to refute my argument.

He visto a Butragueño hacer cosas maravillosas.

What @Buyo says is true, regarding other aspects I haven't explored in depth. Between matches, Amancio could be just as inconsistent as Butragueño, but in the long run, Amancio remained at the top for longer. In that Real Madrid of the "Quinta del Buitre" (the Vulture's Cohort), almost all the young players of that era had a predilection for Butragueño, but viewed with hindsight, the absences of Míchel or Manolo Sanchís might have been more noticeable than Butragueño's, since those two were more consistent, more regular, regardless of personal likes or dislikes.

I've some doubts about Stielike's role at Real Madrid. He was a Defensive Mid or a # 8 ?

For example in this final (UEFA 86), we can see Butragueño in a composite/ mobile role as well : winger who is also the one of these three (with Sanchez and Valdano) who will start actions from a deeper position (winger/ inside) and who can be on all the front of the attack :

For me, here, Butragueño had much like the free-role there in my view. We can see Valdano doing the same too but with less rapidity and fluidity. And Juanito (at this point in time, in a lesser condition) as a MF/PM.

In addition, Santillana was also subbed in by the end, instead of M. Vazquez who played at RB (!).

Stielike was a complete midfielder who gave his all on the pitch. Although his primary role was defensive, he contributed effectively to the attack; I remember how elegantly he dribbled the ball with his head up. His positioning was impeccable, but at times he was a bit too physical. As the years took their toll on his extraordinary physical condition, he gradually moved back to the sweeper role, where he also excelled. Stielike was one of those players who were more highly regarded outside of his country. If I had to place him in a position, I would choose defensive midfielder, although a box-to-box midfielder would also work. Given that Gallego was there, I would rule out the playmaker role at Real Madrid (though he could have been one at Borussia Dortmund). Since he started as a sweeper in his later years, in my opinion, I would place him in central midfield, with a defensive role, though not a positional one, as his work rate was enormous. I would never play him as an insider.

I can't improve on what @Titanlux said :D:D:D, so I wholeheartedly agree with his comment.

On another note, after analyzing Kodda's list, there are a couple of points regarding Spanish players that I find interesting and with which I wholeheartedly agree.

1- I see that his list includes four Spanish goalkeepers: Casillas, Arconada, Ramallets, and Iríbar. These four goalkeepers are clearly ahead of Zubizarreta, who appears ahead of Arconada, Ramallets, and Iríbar on most lists. For those of us who saw Zubizarreta and Arconada play live in Spain during the 1980s, there's simply no comparison between them.

This topic has always been hotly debated, both in Spain during the 80s and 90s and today in many forums. Zubizarreta was a great goalkeeper, but sometimes his excessive number of appearances for Spain NT leads those who didn't see him play to place him higher than I think he deserves.

Arconada is the best Spanish goalkeeper I've seen, along with Casillas, and I'd say he has a comfortable lead over the others. From what I've heard from the older fans, Iríbar was also far superior to Zubizarreta.

Zubi was very good, but not at the level of the four mentioned above (nor, of course, Zamora, who isn't included in this list because he played before 1950).

2- Santillana is my all-time favorite player, and my all-time favorite athlete along with cyclist Pedro Delgado (you see, I'm stuck in the '80s, :D:D:D). Besides, Santillana is one of the best headers of all time and a true idol.

I see he's not on Kodda's list, but I don't want to comment on whether he should be or not. What I want to mention is that Quini is on it, and I completely agree that Quini was better than Santillana—perhaps not by much, but by some. Quini is very underrated on many of the lists circulating online, while on many others Santillana appears and Quini doesn't, or if they both appear, Santillana is almost always ranked higher. And I'll say it again: my idol was Santillana, but I think it's fair to acknowledge that Quini was slightly better.

I'll post the complete lists soon, I'm organizing them now. Perhaps then you can give me impressions about roles and positions by countries. I'll start with the countries with the most players compiled.

Spain surprised me; I didn't remember so many great players from such different eras and I pressume there also will be several from the 40s (an interesting time pre and post war).
