i see Robson has picked that big lumbering carthorse Shola Ameobi to play to up front with shearer.I cant understand that choice .
LuaLua would have been a much better choice..
I hope it doesnt cost newcastle...

    1-1 after 64 minutes....

Gary Speed with the goal in 58th minute...

...apparently Amoebi had a near-miss or two

Lads hang on for the win....

...and Juve shutting out the Dutch...

Newcastle sits in third at six points....a win puts them in the second round, unless Juve cuts deal with Kiyv and throws match.

Well done to Newcastle for winning tonight. :) You can always rely on Shearer to score penalties. I hope they can beat Feyenoord in two weeks time and qualify for the second phase.

We really had to dig deep for this one!

Losing both centre-backs with injuries in the first half put our team off balance and when Kiev scored it really looked bleak.

However, it was a really gritty performance to get back in the game and win it.

Like the last Juve game, what luck there was favoured us last night (goalie's fumble for Speed's goal, referee recognising a foul for the penalty).

On the penalty, it definitely looked a foul, but it is the sort of thing that is usually ignored by refs. Shearer showed his "experience" by making what was happening so obvious that the ref had to take action.

I really think we can beat Feyenoord now; a draw will guarantee us a UEFA spot but we need a win for us and a result (win / draw) for Juve to keep us in the Champions League.

Regrettably, Shola had a horrible game last night.

If we have no other strikers available then I would favour putting Robert up front to play off Shearer (he played there from time to time for PSG) and also against Arsenal in the home FA Cup tie last season.

It looks likely that the new star (we hope) Michael Chopra will get a run out in one of the next few games, probably against Everton in the League Cup.

    Yeah, well, AWESOME!

This was an excellent birthday for me. Too bad we're stuck with such a paltry offering of CL games on the telly here in the states.

Thinking I may need to find my way to Feyenoord.
