    5th minute:

    NEWCASTLE GOAL!

Speed curls in a short cross from just outside the box, Big Al powers it in!

    Same old Shearer
    Always scoring

    11th minute:

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!

Shearer intercepts a bad clearance from Cris (described by Soccernet as "so woeful it's hard to put into words") , feeds the through ball to Ameobi who plays it back across the face to Big Al. Textbook header for the captain!

    Same old Shearer
    Always scoring

    Lord have mercy.

Breakway for Franca... taken down by Given... no booking, but a penalty.

    PENALTY SAVED BY GIVEN!

been having trouble with BS for a while, hence the lack of updates...

35th min: Dyer pulled down from behind in the box. Penalty to Newacstle...

    37th min: GOOOOOOOOOOAL!
    Shearer gets a first-half hat-trick.

    Same old Shearer
    Always scoring

40th min: Ball into the box for Kerr... over to Ameobi... open net... he misses. Should easily be 4-0 by now (or 4-1, if you figure Neuville's PK miss)

Inter and Barca 0-0 at halftime
Bring on the sisters for lots of kissing...

Second half... sloppy, chippy, ugly. A couple of great chances for Ameobi but no dice. Shearer goes inches wide of getting his 4th.

    Pinch me. Hard.

    74th min: GOAL for Leverkusen.
Beautiful little chip in for Babick who smacks in into the roof of the net.

Nope. Closest you can get is highlights on Fox Sports World Report tonight.

I got to watch the game from the 20th minute on, thanks to a friend overseas who provided me with a personal broadband feed... just don't tell UEFA or ESPN International. :)

I really hope Newcastle are still fighting for a spot at the Barcelona match at St. James Park, as I'll be there... I hear the ground is excellent and the fans on Euro nights are spectacular...

What the?! I gotta hook me up one of those. Can't wait to see the highlights. After reading the report, the description of the goals and play sound sweet.

Fans at St. James' are always spectactular, but to be honest the league matches have always been the ones that capture the greatest interest and passion from the most Toon fans.

To wit, attendance at the match tonight was only just above 40,000, compared to a regular sellout average of just under 52,000 for league games.

Whether European matchups or domestic cups, nothing matches a league fixture. Partly this is history, partly economic -- many Toon fans scrape the barrel just to afford their league season tickets, and simply have trouble forking over an extra $50 US or more for additional matches... especially on weeknights when they're on the telly.

Of course, if the Toon can get a point at the San Siro and head into the Barca match with a serious chance at advancing to the quarters, this trend may very well change.

I was there last night and the fans, players and wor Bobby were on great form. Best european night at St James's Park scince the Juve match. Was in the john hall stand so i got to see all the goals close up.

Was mint when me and a few of me mates got the stand singing " Are you Sunderland in Disguise " when shearer headed the second goal in after 11 miniutes.

Motterman: if we are still in conntention it will be a great match with an electric atmosphere. and if we are not you can gaurentee that the Newcastle faithfull will still pour into the stadium to watch Barcelona, about 35,000 tunred up for a friendly against them back in August.

It WOULD be interesting to see a match between Bayer and the Mackems - they are both pants.

Great result but just a few comments on the attendance...

I agree 40,000 was a dissapointing turn out but thats the way it is.

If we are in with a shout coming up to the Barca match it will certainly be a sell out as it was back in the friendly in the summer (52,000, not 35,000 as magoo wrongly states), and it should be a cracking night.

I dont agree with greeine that fans value league games more than Euro nights, the reason for the low attendance is just simply that we dont all have bottomless pits of money to delve into, and dont forget Tyneside has some of the poorest areas in the UK.

With the amount of extra games due to all competions this season your average fan will have to fork out £800 or so on tickets (add a few away games) and that's alot of moollahh!

    It all adds up!

    Howay the lads!!

That's why I mentioned that money was a significant factor. For many, like it was for most of my family back in the Toon from 1926-1995, the inability to afford anything other than league matches directly led to a somewhat lessened interest in other matches.

Not to mention, we are talking about the fans in the ground for these games and even when the park is packed to the gills the crowd for a league match is generally louder than for a Cup match -- early round matches, anyway.

But yes, if we can head into that Barca match with a quarters spot on the line, the crowd will be unbelievable in its atmosphere. If it's a glorified friendly, it'll still be a strong atmosphere, but surely it won't match the crowd for the Blackburn game on the adjoining weekend.

In any event, there is no such thing as a less than exhilirating experience when taking in a match at St. James, regardless of the nature of the match nor the size of the crowd -- no surprise it's one of the best-attended grounds and clubs in the world.

You must sit in the posh seats mate! Milburn stand?

I sit in the Leazes £420 for season ticket and £27 per CL and most FA and League Cup games.
