Apparently this is the new back up keeper. http://www.4thegame.com/club/gretna-fc/player-profile/3852/tonycaig.html http://www.gretnafootballclub.co.uk/first/profiles/caig/ According to Dynamo Website.
Re: Welcome Tony Caig Did he play for the Whitecaps last season?? Is this him?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lyWIe0MDLg
Re: Welcome Tony Caig Yes and also Blackpool. Previous Club(s) Carlisle United, Blackpool, Charlton Athletic, Hibernian, Newcastle United, Vancouver Whitecaps
Re: Welcome Tony Caig this smells like a Dalglish signing. even has Blackpool ties like Paul. why can't we have the south american pipeline that DC has, why God why. no seriously, its a probelm if we only concentrate on one pipeline (Scotland). we need to open up a couple of more. doesn't have to be latin america (although there's reasons why that would be an advantage). i'll take an Uzbeki or Bulgarian if i have to.
Re: Welcome Tony Caig Blackpool?? I already have them on my handle. and he was born in 1974 making him 34. does this mean he's a quick fix or do you guys see him lasting like Pat"the Energizer Bunny" Onstad??
Re: Welcome Tony Caig 8 appearances in Scotland. No goals allowed in 3oo plus minutes.Havent looked up his Whitecaps stats yet. I wonder how much he will count against the cap? Are we going to target some forwards now?
Re: Welcome Tony Caig His wikipedia entry says he was at Vancouver for the 2006 season but left in June of 2007 to return to England for personal reasons. The Whitecaps refused to release him from his contract so he was not able to play for Gretna until October of 2007. Caig played in 23 games in 2006 for Vancouver. He allowed 25 goals in those games for a 1.086 goals against average and had 7 shutouts. In 2007, he appeared in 11 games and allowed only 9 goals for a 0.818 goals against average. He also racked up three more shutouts. The Vancouver situation and his age makes me wonder if this will be a short-term deal. It would seem to fit in with our "win now" philosophy.
Re: Welcome Tony Caig I believe that having an experienced Goalkeeper instead of a young and untested one is a good choice. him being Scottish will bring color to the locker room. I like it !! Welcome Tony "The Tiger" Caig
Re: Welcome Tony Caig to me the end result will only be determined if Boswell returns to his old form.If he has a bad year and Zac starts for DC and has alot of success Im going to say this was a bad trade........Zac looked really good for us last year and he would have been the heir apparent to Pat.Now we have a midthirties backup who only split time with his former USL1 team.........He may end up being good for us .......I really hope so cause were going to need him at some point. If he performs well and Boswell doesnt then we still came out on the short end because Boswell is supposed to start.
Re: Welcome Tony Caig Damn he looks scary I almost choked on a piece of gum when you posted that!! Uh, no one loved Zach more than me, but I'm so over him. it's time to let it go Indy. and besides, we needed a Goalie either way.........Que,no???
Re: Welcome Tony Caig yes i agree we definintely need a backup goal keeper. My point is that if Boswell doesnt play at a high level then we are going to net an under performing starting centerback and a midthirties backup goal keep. And we lost a starting level younger goalkeep......Im still optimistic and trust Dom and OL to stock our team.I m just sayin..........
Re: Welcome Tony Caig Eddie and Waibel won't let Boswell underperform - it would be too painful for him!
Re: Welcome Tony Caig I agree with the general thoughts posted so far - this is clearly a short term move, and it looks like it's probably a decent move for this year. But Houston still has a big hole to fill in figuring out who the goalkeeper of the future is - it will be interesting to see who they bring in as the third keeper on the developmental roster. Can they find someone who might develop into a future starter, or will they rely on a trade/free agent signing in the future to replace Onstad.... Given his resume, I would guess that he's not going to be getting paid too much. But, Wells was not paid that much either ($50k), so this will probably be about a wash as far as the salary cap change from last year to this year.
Re: Welcome Tony Caig So do you all really think that Boswell is definitely the starter? I would expect Ianni to get a good chance to earn the starting job, particularly given how Boswell played last year. Boswell may end up just being depth at defender for the team.
Re: Welcome Tony Caig I don't really get this. You have one ancient keeper and one closing in on ancient. There are a bunch of young USL keepers who did very well last year. Maybe they are all under contract or something, but it certainly would seem to be more sensible to go for <30 guy who might turn out to be Onstad's replacement.
Re: Welcome Tony Caig We still took on Boswell's salary which is around 50k, whatever Caig is being paid will be an additional cap hit.
Re: Welcome Tony Caig I don't know...Boswell only signed a 1 yr. contract IIRC because he wants to play in Europe. I don't think he would be very happy being a sub rather than a starter if those are his plans. What does everyone else think?
Re: Welcome Tony Caig When Glen Davis and I were chatting the other day that's what I was talking about. I told Mr. Davis that I felt Patrick should be the starter since he was one of our guys who stepped up during last season and was with the Olympic Squad(at the time) while the "Bozzilla" was playing with his internet, or blog or whatever they call it. Glen told me that no one should think they had a spot in team given to them, that they should earn the position by proving your worth in the trainning camps and such. so, let the competition begin !!
Re: Welcome Tony Caig I agree with this, how each of them performs is what will determine who gets to start. And I think both of them have a good chance at it.
