Tom Dooley, former USMNT player and yank abroad (sort of), has put his name in as the new possible coach of 1 FC Kaiserslautern. Dooley played 107 games with 13 goals from 1989-1993 with a German Cup in 1989 and a Bundesliga title in 1991. Steve Dooley, Tom's brother, is the coach for the A-Junior team which are the defending title holders.

Tom Dooley is considered to have a bit of a long shot, but Kaiserslautern has a history of hiring former players. He would replace Wolfgang Wolf who was fired early this week.

Maybe, but remember he is really a German who ended up with American citizenship.

Funny enough, the other trainer in contention (and apparently a leading candidate) is Klaus Toppmoeller- formerly of the Dallas Tornado- who's son Dino may or may not have been born in the US (DMN emailed Dino's club, but I guess they never responsed).

    Its a Yanks Abroadsicle.....

Note to thread: DO NOT invite England66 and Toppmoeller to the same party.

Then I imagine he will soon be looking to call up Josh Wolff, Clint Mathis and Ricardo Clark.

Ya and they'll be taking the midnight train there ... unless the lights go out in that wine-producing region of the world.

And was asked to put his name in. I think he may be the front runner, but there are a lot of names being thrown around.

Dooley was raised en Deutschland, but he was born with US citizenship rights given his father was an American GI. Dooley also keeps a home in Laguna Niguel, CA, where he founded the Orange County Kings youth soccer club, and has openly expressed his very strong appreciation of his time as a USMNT member and the US.

Right, but he grew up in a German soccer system and thinks like a German. I did not mean it in a bad way, and I am glad that he is the only yank to play for the 1st team. In fact the club considers him an American even though he did not get citizenship until his last year at the club.

I would love for him or anyone else to look at Americans. Even though there is a large concentration of Americans in the area Kaiserslautern has been horrible with trying to connect with those fans.

Ummm... No, the Junioren-Bundesliga. There are 3 regions and then a national playoff for the champion.

I get a summary of local articles and other news in my email and his name was in a couple articles. I originally got it off of a German language list, which I assume the person got it out of an article. I will look for a source and post it here, but I have seen it in multiple places now.

UPDATE: Found an blog posting where someone references a kicker article.

Ooops. Must have been a regional title and a loss in the playoffs. Thanks for the correction.

So presumably Steve Dooley is a US citizen, too. Should we be following his managerial career?

You forgot Homburg, with whom he started his pro career and won third and second division titles.

I know, I just did not care. He is a former yank abroad and Kaiserslautern player being considered for the Trainer/Coach position at Kaiserslautern.

I'm tyring to remember the chronology here, but I think Dooley was also the interim coach at 1. FC Saarbruecken in the 2nd division, maybge after Klaus Toppmoeller flamed out there?

Hey, looks like Dooley has a Web page: http://www.thomasdooley.us/

I think this is a possibility but he does like CA and has a real strong mission to make the OC Kings successful.

    But he could do both.
