If this team played Copa Libertadores when they were at their strongest, do you think they would of had a chance to win it all? I think they are the most underrated team in all the Americas.
they may be underrated, but you have to admit when there are teams that in my opinion are stronger than Toluca (Boca, River, Nacional [Montevideo], Brazilians) they would have had to work at it just like any other team.
I dont think that there were teams stronger than them as mentioned above, just look at how bad they beat the Mexican teams that were doing good in the CL, but they do play pretty crappy in international tournaments.
just look: big game yesterday with low table Cruz azul and 3-1 handed up by argies delgado and Cata. they do not have enuf personnel to handle 2 tourneys at the same time, like Boca Jrs or santos de Diego/robinho/elano
Toluca had a a couple good years in the early 70s. Then fell of the radar. They then did well in the mid 90s and are starting to decline. Aging players and not enough work with thier youth teams. Basically the same recipe from the early 70s. Up until 1998, they had only won 3 titles. People say they have 7 titles and are one of the best MFL teams of all time ... if you think about it.. you can win 6 titles in 3 years time because you have 2 championships in one year. Cruz Azul has 8 titles.. but they did it when you had one championship per year... imagine how many more championships Cruz Azul or America or UNAM would have if they had the opportunity to dispute 2 championships a year. UNAM has 3 titles and Pachuca also has 3 titles. title wise they are even... but thats actually very decpetive. UNAM since the mid 70s has had great squads. the MFL is not like most leagues... a playoff determines the champ and some forget what teams do in the league itself. most non mexicans who watch the MFL dont understand why America, Cruz Azul, Unam are still considered to best when they dont win every year.. and they see Boca and River with infinitely many more titles than thier countrer parts... throughout a long season teams like America, Cruz Azul, UNAM have the money, resources, players to stay on top of the standings where as the smaller teams cant really compete... but in a playoff... anything can happen.. a missed called, an offside goal, etc. If that format was implemented in lets say the Argentinean league... I would expect River, Boca, Independiente, Rosario to lead the standings... but I would expect teams like Lanus, Banfield, Chacarita to win some liguillas... anything can happen in those. In Verano 2002.. nobody remembers the great season La Piedad had. First place.. and they were eliminated by America. They wont remember La Piedad because they dont get there many times. But when you had teams like America, Cruz Azul, UNAM that were placing first numerous times... people did pay attention. Toluca probably has to be the worst MFL team when it comes to international tournaments. I have to agree with imapled... Toluca sucks at international events
aguilas one championship in 11 years! I do not Know how many for cruz azul or Pumas in the last 11 yrs.
Pumas hasnt won a title since 91. Cruz Azul has not won sin 97 but went since 1980 since winning a title. America went 12 years. people dont forget that squads those 3 teams had in the 70s and 80s and early 90s. They say the best squad of all time was the 82-83 Club America squad. They finished with 61 points (they finished with like 15-16 points ahead of everyone else). averaged close to 3 goals per game. They lost in the semifinals to Chivas (only series to lose to CHivas in playoffs and probabaly the most hurtful).. By the BTW.. Puebla won the final with el Pelon Lapuente (Lapuente got famous as a coach winning 2 titles with little ol'e Puebla..puebla's only 2 titles to date) I know you havent watched the MFL for too long and can just go to a site and look at many titles each team has...but thats kind of deceptive.. Cruz Azul had a great squad during the 90s. In 99 they had the best team, but lost to Pachuca in the finals.. The 94-95 America team with Leo Beenhaker was lethal. The liguilla is awsome and gives it more excitement.. and one of the reasons the MFL is not in shambles like many other leagues in central and south america... because it gives the teams with less resources a chance to win. but people dont forget those teams that are constantly there.. and quitefrankly.. to get back on subject... Toluca is not one of those teams... regardless of what they have done since 1998
point clear and well taken no I have not follow MFL in the 70's or 80's just in the last few yrs, and until goltv - foxsports espanol and lst month's marvel TVcolombia in dishnetwork. the meat of the matter is in the first 4 sentences and the last one of your post! BTW....colombia's cuadrangulares, are sort of a liguilla.... and the throne has changed hands since that kind of playoff system: examples DIM 2002 -cristal caldas 2003 and last semester with dept Tolima. The rest of suramerica has few teams on the liga to make that system works, like venezuela & ecuador (10 teams), peru bolivia and chile (12 teams).... brazil is really complicated and argentina very simple! Uruguay and paraguay are sort of colombia's model
