This is a crying shame. The guy is still one of the world's best keepers. He's just unfortunate to have a younger guy ahead of him, who is even better. At least he had one great international tournament (Euro2000), even though it ended in sadness.

yeah this is a shame. I would think if say Buffon got hurt in next 2 yrs during the run up to the next World Cup Toldo would consider stepping back in...

Maybe Carlo Cudicini will finally get a chance?

Very disappointing that someone of Toldo's class would allow his ego to get in the way of service to the national squad. Pellizoli will hopefully get the call now.

You must be becoming dillusional bobarino since when is a seasoned veteran, (who has had his time in the lime light and is unlikely to recliam it any time soon), allowing their ego to get in the way by stepping aside for younger talent. Toldo in my mind is doing the right thing, he is 33 years old now and is past his prime. He is still a great goalkeeper mind you, he still has the skills to step in should Buffon get injured. However it is now time for him to allow young talent like Pellizoli and De Scantis to get a chance to shine. Their time will come and friendlies and substitutions leading up to the World Cup will give the chosen one a taste of international football and give them a bit more confidence should they be called upon. Toldo knows that although he is still a great he is no where near to recliaming the starting position from Buffon. He has the skills but not the consistency as such his talent is no longer required.

There is a lot of depth at this position for Italia and Toldone relieving the pressures on himself, the coach, as well as his teammates is a burden off everyone's shoulders. He no longer has to worry about making sure he is ready for a national call up. The coach is no longer required to think about having to call him up for honour's sake. Furthermore it increases the competition among the young league goalies to step up their game as they now have a chance to make it to the national team. When you look at a lot of other national sides they have a seasoned pro as back up as well as a young guy should the need be warranted. This is what Italy should have done rather than calling up Peruzzi. It is a win-win situation and we will always remember Toldo' heroics against Holland in Euro 2000. You should be hailing his move rather than insulting him for it.

My respect for his skills blinded me from the true intentions of his retirement. You are absolutely right, I was dillusional. But it has passed...
