Well, the Vlatko quote that @cpthomas has referred to a couple times does make sense in terms of planning for potential extra time and PKs when it comes to, say, Heath, who there's uncertainty about how long she can go for. But that reasoning applied to Lavelle, too, I thought. (Plus Lavelle and Press turned out to be designated PK takers) Yeah, I thought Lloyd works better with the other forwards, the one exception perhaps being Rapinoe who can't play much more than 30 minutes (if that)
One other interesting thing to look for: will Heath be on the left and Williams on the right or vice versa? Or are they going to interchange anyway like Vlatko sometimes likes to have them do? It just occurred to me, Williams is more likely to be on the right for defensive reasons, to help out O'Hara...
Out of curiosity, I just went back and looked at the line-up from the SheBelieves match earlier this year: Naeher; Purce, Sauerbrunn, Dahlkemper, Dunn; Ertz, Horan, Macario; Williams, Lloyd, Rapinoe Sonnett, Krueger, Kristie Mewis, Lavelle, Morgan and Press were all subbed in, and Lavelle scored the goal (rebound off a free kick).
Anyone see that "96 Effect" on Peacock? Don't know if it includes a replay of the entire Gold Medal Match or not.
*full match. Part of the match did air, just not the full match. I know, because that is the tournament when I started following the USWNT.
Beating Mexico is always sweet, especially at Gold Cup. Mexico thinks she owes them...lol...Let's beat another neighbor
It definitely won't be USA-Australia. The US will be going for the win. You can already see them pressing, and not setting up the block in their own half like vs Australia. Canada though, so far (it's early), has done pretty well on breaking the first line of the US press. It does look like Canada is going for the physical game though. I'd expect nothing less.
Same was true at the beginning of the Netherlands match. Netherlands scored on their first foray into the US half, I think. You can't make me feel better. I'm going to be nervous; it's a semifinal! It's Canada. I'm starting to wonder if we should have had more than one midfielder sub though. I guess Rapinoe or Lloyd could also sub in there if we end up with injuries.
