I have had the same thing happen to a big toe-nail of mine. Definitely nasty. Anyway, a few weeks ago I went to a local Running Shoe Specialist store to get some new running shoes (training for a marathon). They do an extensive examination of your feet, and the guy noticed a small bruise under my big toenail. He had already measured my feet, and suggested a half-size larger than I'd been wearing, citing the fact that your feet swell as you run. So if your shoes are tight, or just feel like a "perfect" fit when you put them on, they'll be too small after about 20 minutes of running. Wearing your shoes too snug will also cause them to be stretched by the swelling of your feet. With that in mind, I went with the size 10 Brooks he recommended. Today I was shopping for some new cleats for both soccer and rugby (though I play more rugby than soccer now). Since I'm a back, it makes more sense to wear soccer cleats as opposed to rugby specific boots. I tried on the new Puma King in size 10, and they felt like they were molded to my feet, which I would have previously thought was a great thing, now I know better, so I went with the 10.5 I'll come back after I've had a few pick-up soccer games, a rugby practice, and a 7s tournament on Saturday.
only time ive had a problem with my toe nails getting damaged was whilst wearing vapor III but the reason they only got hurt was bcus i was too fast for defenders so they trod on my toes but since ive changed to wear f50.8s ive never came home with bruised toes/ nails
