I wasn't sure if I should have posted this under the equipment or player subforum, but regardless it deals with both. I've been having a problem that started recently during college (so its been going on for about 3 years now). Sometimes when I play, after shooting and landing on my kicking foot or dribbling and coming to a very abrupt stop I get sharp pains in my toes. I normally just continue to play walk it off, but after practice, I see that my toenails have either cracked, bruised underneath the nail or both. It's usually the pinky and ring toes. I've tried different types of shoes, differing in width (narrow/wide), how much extra length there is (tight fitting shoes/loose shoes), material (k-leather/synthetic) and nothing has remedied the problem. Perhaps my feet are just messed up. Does anybody else have similar problems, and any advice on how to fix it? (What type of shoes are you wearing?)

-I also wanted to mention, a friend of mine from Italy said some footballers remove their toenails permanently. Not sure if thats true, but perhaps they have the same problems. Anybody heard of crazy stuff like that?

when i started to play again, i had a pair of nikes that were one half size too big. they caused my toe nail on my big toes to became brusied and even fall off. now i wear my boots tight and have never had that problem since. when you stop, the foot slides forward into that extra room and slams the front of the toe box. thats were the damage happens.

The reason toenails are there is because you can do some serious damage to the muscles in your toes when you stub them if they aren't there. Removing them wouldn't be in the players' interests IMO.

I've had the exact opposite experience to cjump, since I started deliberately wearing my boot (vapors) snug i've perpetually had subunjual haematomas, blood blisters under the nail (tho this may well be due to the less protection from the thin material of the vapors and not the fit). The nail above the blister "dies" and the new nail grows beneath it. I'll even post a pic later to illustrate it (warning will not be pretty) as currently it's in the last stage just before the old nail and scab fall off, and when it does the new nail will magically be halfway grown! This whole process takes months (4-6 even) but is pretty painless (compared to ingrown toenails!!!)
Now I realise mine is always my big toe and from your description it's not exactly the same, but my point is I don't believe it's possible to permanently remove the nail- I've been told at the ER room (I was in for something else and was like "while im here...") that they can pull them off but this ain't different to me pulling/cutting it off myself (I've tried it but it's effort so now I just leave em seeing as it's only aesthetically bad), the only thing i can say may be relevant is that if u get blood blisters, when they first form the can pierce the nail to bleed it thru and releive the pressure- tho still they tend to avoid this as it's kinda un-necessary in most cases...

When i first started wearing V1s my toe nails became bruised but never to that extent. They were just a bit painful.

Could you not go and see a chiropodist/Pediatrist and see if they can offer you any advise?

You can see an arc at the bottom that is where the old dead nail stopped growing and has come away...
Yea sure it's not the same and apps is right u need to see a specialist in person if it's an issue, but i just felt like sharing!

i know im new but ive recently had this problem when wearing my new predator powerswerves and have had the brusing on both my big toes. The most pain came from when changing direction whilst running and when slowing down after running fast/sprinting

reasons that i think could have caused this problem are:-

    - i feel my boots are too tight
    - i didn't cut my toe nails before playing, meaning they were long
    - the surface i was playing on when the problem occured (3G/field turf)

please could i have some advice on what the main problem is and how to solve it

    Thanks

Yummy Case. Thanks for that. I've never experienced bruised nails to that degree so I don't have much of an advice, but would definitely suggest to make sure the toe nails are cut as short as possible and filed with a nail file. I noticed my big toes hurt less after I trim them and file them down before a game.

    No need to double post

I had your exact problem for probably about a year and a half. When it gets really cold and after you go in a warm place does your toe hurt really bad? I am almost positive you had an ingrown toe nail cuz my big toe looked exactly like yours. You ll have to undergo some minor surgery and wont be able to play for a couple of weeks. If its not an ingrown toe nail its problem just bruised and bloods under it and the only way to get it out is to burn a needle and poke it threw your toenail. GO see a doctor about it htey can explain it better. I would take a picture of mine a month after the surgerey but i cant find my camera:(

Also cutting your toe nails really short only make an ingrown toe nail worse. You can look up what causes an ingrown toenail

sorry for the nasty bump

    case

last year (around may) while playing some guy stepped on my big toe...if hurt like hell for a few weeks then got better...after that i had the same blister as you got

as i clipped the nail i could definitely feel that there was a toenail growing underneath
it finally disappeared this year...but it came back all of a sudden  and it wasn't from any contact (other than the ball) or shoes too tight

after your nail healed from that blister...did it ever happen to you again ?

Yea like I said I've perpetually had them...once the new nail grows back it'll be back to normal for mebe a few months then sumhow I'll get it again and go thru the exact same process, it's like a annual cycle!!!
Luckily I've never really had the pain u speak of from it, just the occasional discomfort and anguish when I perform the surgery to remove the straggly old nail

coz my public wants it, here's an update of what my nail looks like now....
As you can see after 3 months the nail had grown back almost entirely, only for a new haematoma to magically form. It was just about clean and back to normal when the latter happened, if you look at my comparison pic below you can see how the lil bit of scab at the bottom of the first pic grew out with the nail until it's at the top of the nail in the second pic!

Seriously I swear like 1 in 3 guys on my team has at least one big toe like that! it's the only manly topic of conversation in the locker room (they all seem to have got new born kids and all the nappy vomit and sleepless nights talk just ain't how I grew up in sport- it was always more about trying not to make babies:p)

"you canny shove ur granny off the bus"

apps, I may just send u my dead scab-coated nail when it next falls off, u still based on that same street corner???

I can only say mine have only happened since I switched from leather preds to thinner synthetic vapors, which tells me it could be the lack of protection from the vaps, BUT if u guys getting conflicting experiences I got nothing other than wearing those foam toe sleeves to pad the nail? It'll make ur touch cumbersome, but protect ur sandal game a lil!
