Yeah, I am too. You've probably heard this commercial if you listen to Columbus radio. And here's what I don't like about it. They bill opening day as april 5th. Because the CCC on 3/23 is technically not a crew home game, but rather a US Soccer home game, they're limited in what they can do to promote. We could easily get 10K people. But because the crew can't promote it, we're stuck with 4,000 fans. But it is a season ticket game, so hopefully we'll get more. We've all seen the results of the "Jim Smith Marketing Machine". Yeah, that's a load. And I don't like that. 13 days and counting. (no matter what the commercials say).
Not sure about the dynamics of the US soccer/Crew home game (although I think you're wrong on this one), but the whole we can't promote it thing reaks of "cheap bastard cop out".
im in indy, obviously, so i can't help.. but why not make some simple flyers (or is it fliers? im too tired to check.) and distribute around town: coffee shops, grocery stores, campus, etc.
"Flyers" is correct. "Fliers" are aviators. I think my beloved UD spells it incorrectly for looks or something.
Re: Re: Tired of all the snow? If we get this US game, look for the crew to sit back on their hands. It's a US game, so the Crew apparently make little (if any) money off tickets, so they apparently don't want to promote it. "cheap bastard cop out" is right. Anytime Crew players take the field in Columbus, the jim smith marketing machine needs to go into overdrive.
Re: Re: Re: Tired of all the snow? Are you likening this tournament to the US Open cup? If so, again I believe you are mistaken.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Tired of all the snow? the point being made is that the Crew don't seem to be promoting the upcoming match because there isn't much at stake for them financially as would be for an MLS match.
I think, and it's just my opinion, that they don't want to take away from the "Opening Day" festivities, Crew Week, etc. for this game which most people aren't going to care that much about anyway. To promote this game heavily might sell a few more tix but would also badly dilute the "big story" message, the "big event" marketing effort for opening day. I have in the past, and likely will in the future, complain about how some "special" games are promoted. This is a game only an aficionado could love, and it's just not the sort of thing that most people are going to be interested in.
I agree with Bill's thinking on this. In addition to the "bigness" of opening day with all its surrounding hype, don't forget that it's a nationally-televised match where a large turnout is arguably more important than it is for the Champions Cup match. I just hope my tickets arrive in time for the Champions Cup match.
Doesn't matter we'll be up 5-0 on agg before the second leg, making this just a warm up match. We'll wait and see how they address our second round match.
True, but knowing the Ohio weather, next week's game could very well be played in windy/cloudy conditions with a high of 38.
