I was in Wien and Salzburg for about ten days and took my young sons to the intimate stadium in Grödig to see the match against Rapid this past Sunday. Grödig is just minutes outside Salzburg, and in fact, the stadium is probably only 5 miles from Red Bull Arena as the crow flies. Beautiful setting, as the small stadium has seating on only three sides and the fourth opens to a picturesque Alpine scenery. I'll post some pics in the near future. Though they often draw around 1,000 spectators, Grödig saw closer to 3,000 for this big-name rival. Was quite amusing, really. The Rapid supporters section was packed with singing fans and flags, while the Grödig supporters section was probably the most sparsely filled section in the stadium. I thought Rapid was very sluggish in the first half, and they went into halftime down a goal. Grödig's young Brazilian Venuto earned and converted a PK. (He's a very dynamic player who impressed.) Before the PK could be taken, the grounds crew spent a couple minutes cleaning the field of projectiles that had rained down from the Rapid supporters section. In the second half, Rapid attacked with more urgency, though they didn't really create much in the way of clear scoring chances. The Grödig keeper, who was pretty solid otherwise, mishandled a relatively easy ball in front of the goal, and a Rapid player pounced on it for the equalizer. But Grödig took the ensuing kickoff right down field to immediately restore the one-goal advantage. Again it was the midfielder Venuto who scored for the home side. Rapid kept pressing but couldn't break down the Grödig defense. Big win for the little club and a fun outing with the boys, who walked away with some SV Grödig gear to commemorate the event.

Four rounds to go, and Salzburg has a six-point lead and better goal difference. I don't think Rapid will be able to catch them. It's also looking like Grödig will be relegated. Making up eight points in four rounds is almost impossible, especially considering two of the remaining fixtures are against the top two teams in the league. I really think Grödig's downfall came when Venuto moved to Austria Wien in the winter break. (I guess that's the common fate of the small club.) Before that, they were in 7th place, but have only earned ten points in the last 13 rounds.
