Timmy was on the cover of USA Today. The article pretty much covered how he went from not being a celebrity in the US to being one now and how he's Man U's starter.
A little dodgy on some of the facts. I distinctly recall Roy Carroll in the pipes in the Champions League game I attended.
Ok so Carroll started one game against Stuttgart. Big f'kng deal. If you attended the game, why didn't you remember which team it was against?
Actually Carroll has started more than just the one game. As far as the game I attended. I didn't "forget", I merely didn't "say." Trust me, I know what games I've seen. It's my business, check for yourself: http://www.ibiblio.org/footy/2003/1209_man_vfb_ajm.php
As of two weeks ago, Timmy had started all of the EPL games, but that is obviously not ALL of the games they've played this season, and was the only ManU player to have played in them all to that point. But, he's been in enough of them!
I think Andy's criticism wasn't so much of Timmy as it was of the shoddy fact-checking allowed at McPaper. There's no excuse for the kind of simple mistakes they allow.
yes there is an excuse, reporting is held to a different standard there than it is here...they are a lot "looser" with their interpretations than any reputable news source could ever be here...nonetheless, i dont know why this really matters...he was a *#*#*#*#*#in METRO and now look at what hes doin...
But they had a bar graph with the number of games started and timmy's bar was WAY higher than everyone else's, so their data has to be right. If it's in a bar graph, it's like gospel.... Kidding. I know Andy wasn't talking about Timmy, I was just pointing out that he'd started all of the EPL games to date as of very recently, if not still. I don't read USA today for many reasons, and you can throw fact checking in there, but the killer for me is that they try to put everything into a damn multicolor chart (that and the 6th grade reading level). I think they have Ross Perot's microsoft Excel chart maker geek on a wicked retainer.
like it or not, minor factual mistakes are the norm in all media. even if organizations had people to question every frickin factoid, you'd still have to then have the time and expertise to make those corrections...a few always fall through the cracks. but to simply pick out the flaws and dismiss the rest is snobbery at it's worst.
i don't think Andy can really grasp what it must be like to have a player from his team go overseas and make such a big impact, so he started nit picking the article instead...i'm sure he won't be worrying about typos in Preki's retirement announcement or whatever big news comes out of KC next..
If you are giving a reporter grief for a mistake, then you need to be accurate and complete. Please let me know what other champions league or premiership game Carroll started this year. I couldn't find it. Thanks
Don't pay attention much, do ya. I nitpick all the time. It's part of the fun of BigSoccer. I don't measure the "success" of the Wizards by players graduating to Europe (and offhand, I can only think of Onandi Lowe at Rushden and Diamonds ), but by the hardware they win with the team. Last time I checked Preki helped lead the Wizards to an MLS Cup/Supporters Shield double. Timmy Howard led the MetroStars to ... um... nothing. And as far as I know the MetroStars don't get partial credit for any medals that Howard wins with ManU. As an American soccer fan I am ecstatic to see Timmy at ManU. Heck, I went to the trouble to go see him play (even abandoning tickets to Glasgow when word came that I had a pass to Old Trafford). Go Timmy! And FYI, the wallpaper I made of that image - at the request of some Metro fans - is still online at http://www.ibiblio.org/footy/timhoward_ajm.jpg (1024x768)
Nice try..This post is about Timmy and his success at ManU..and not about the Metros As for whether the Metros should get credit...Acutally yes, tons of it. It may have been dumb luck, but who brought him into the league.
