They will turn over to the Special Prosecutor all of their documents related to Matthew Cooper and his contact with an as-yet-unnamed source within the WH. It was this or jail within a week for Cooper.

    News report

    Time Inc's official statement

The NY Times & Judy "WMD" Miller are as yet not agreeing to release anything. Meanwhile, Bob Novak isn't facing any threat of jail time, even though he's the guy who actually did the leak.

So what's the over/under on Rove as the source?

That was my initial thought, but I have come to learn that Rove is the brains behind the WH and far too savy to be the actual leak, even if he was the source and instigator. I guess it could get interesting if the actual leak spills his or her guts as to who gave that person their marching orders.

I would expect as much from such a bastion of journalistic integrity.

    Now as for Judith Miller...

I've wondered why the NYT has kept her and not dumper her like a girlfriend with VD. Surely they cannot be quite happy with what she has contributed to journalistic accuracy so far?

Sounds like a great opportunity for the NYTimes. Don't cave and release like Time, and maintain your idealistic integrity. Let the government pack Judy off to jail. Maybe she'll give some excellent exposes on white collar criminal jails?

All of the smart money is on Scooter Libby, not Rove.

Speculation says Scooter Libby. Sounds like G. Gordon Liddy, y'know

I don't understand this. Special Prosecutor already knows who the leaker is because Novak told him. There has to be something else to this that none of us know about.

Did Novak announce that he had told them? I don't remember that story. If so, you're right. That does make this all much more interesting. Perhaps there were multiple leakers. Considering the number of journalists that were contacted, I wouldn't be surprised.

    From the first link, above:

Arthur Sulzberger Jr., the publisher of The New York Times, said in a statement: "...Our focus is now on our own reporter, Judith Miller, and in supporting her during this difficult time."

    Fvck Judith Miller. Period.

Next bet: how fast/slow the DOJ goes once the leak is exposed.

    What integrity?

multiple established journalists saying the same person told them = better case.

Otherwise, it's he said/she said, and then Bush would be golfing with OJ, looking for the real leaker.

How do you think a guy with a name like "Scooter" would fair in the general prison population?

(I know, he will go to Club Fed, but its an interesting thought.)

There were two leakers. We're pretty sure Libby was one. My recollection from last summer when this broke is, there are 2 candidates for the "second leaker" and both are closely tied to Cheney. But that's a pretty vague recollection.

I think they're pursuing obstruction charges.

I was wondering the same thing, then...
    Aha!

Maintain journalistic cred and throw Jude under the bus - you couldn't play this any better.

There is a 3rd option here that none of you seem to accept; CIA operative Valerie Plame herself, or her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, leaked the information themselves for media attention

The sad part is most Fox News viewers believe that.

    y'know that makes sense.

i had heard something about a new reality tv show, "Who wants to voluntarily blow their cover and be a CIA media whore".

Shame about how the ratings suck though.

Her cover was never blown by the leak. She's an analyst and has been one for years now. There's no longer a law that states that you have to hide the fact that you work for the CIA. Had she been in the Special Services branch then we could argue about her cover being blown, but she's not. She's an analyst.

That doesn't negate the illegality of leaking her name.

Was it legal to leak her name, or not?

Well it was eventually...through media use of it... that is why I firmly believe that either analyst Plame herself, or her husband Wilson, had something to do with it...

If you follow this story in detail, and know a bit about her husband, he revels in intrigue....there was a story on former Ambassador Joseph Wilson that featured a picture of him on mall in limo... he fancies himself a spy of sorts... and he hates the current Administration... not hard to follow the motive....
