The particularly awful thing is how many kids are caught in crossfires.

I'm not sure what the answer is to this ongoing, decade after decade problem. But since almost all of these murders are by gunfire, one would think the solution would have to involve removing the guns from young men's hands, somehow and in some way.

 

Tracking how the guns get to the hands of criminals needs more investment, we do have some research on it, but much more is needed, and we need more penalties at the point of when guns go from "lawful gun owner" to 'guy that will sell guns to unlicensed people'

The problem is that there may be a lot of people in that category.

One thing that comes through in that article is the lack of federal response. Illinois can only control what goes on within its state. A whole lot of guns come to Chicago from out of state. That is federal jurisdiction and no surprise, the GOP isn't interested in putting much effort into controlling gun movements across state lines.

But we do a shitty job even on the 40% that come from with in the state, if our state laws were very good at stopping illegal purchases, the out of state number should be in the 80-90% range (you would still have stolen guns with in the state).

 

Stopping the flow of guns into Chicago was going to be the solution a few years ago. But with the country awash in guns it's hard to keep them out. It would be a great law enforcement success if we reduced the inflow by 20%, but even that wouldn't make much of a difference.

In order to stop the shootings society needs to address the underlying problems, but that's too hard and it's not going to happen.

They probably mean seven miles northwest of the city center. For example, a map program will tell you that Evanston is 12 miles from Chicago, although Evanston borders Chicago.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — A gunman opened fire inside an Illinois bowling alley, killing three people and injuring three others Saturday night in what authorities believe was a random attack.
A 37-year-old male suspect was in custody after the shooting at Don Carter Lanes, Rockford police said in a social media post.

A 37 year old Floridian military man. Killed 3 guys around 70 years old. The other 3 shoy were a 62 year old man, a 14 year old boy and a 16 year old girl.
