Look. I don't have any real belief that what I'm about to say will have any purchase with you or @marek but I'm stupidly going to try anyway.

I am a white male. If something goes wrong in my life that falls into the domain of "stuff the police are for," I can call the police and have a reasonable expectation that involving the police will improve the situation. For example, if I get assaulted by a neighbor, I can call the police with the expectation that calling the police won't make things even worse.

I also expect that if I'm pulled over in a traffic stop, it will almost certainly be for a legitimate reason, and I will be treated with respect during the stop by an officer who will not needlessly escalate the situation.

Because I have these expectations, I go through life with a certain level of subconscious comfort. I'm not worried and on edge all the time, because I have the subconscious reassurance that comes from believing that a powerful institution has my back.

Black people in the U.S. do not have these expectations. So they don't get to have that level of subconscious comfort. They don't get to believe that a powerful institution has their back, and cannot expect that an encounter with the police, when they've done nothing wrong, won't turn bad anyway.

You argue that stats show that criminals are more of a threat to black people than the police are. That's irrelevant to the point. The point is that unlike criminals, police aren't supposed to be a threat at all -- and since they are, black people have nowhere to turn when things go wrong.

Yes, criminals are more of a threat. But when one of those criminals victimizes me, I have a place to turn. When one of those criminals victimizes a black person in the U.S., they don't feel they have a place to turn. Nobody has their back. If I'm walking down the street ans see a police car approaching, I have NO expectation that my life is about to get worse. Black people in the U.S. don't get to feel the same way. Going through life with the realization that the folks who are supposed to protect you stand an unacceptably high chance of making things worse for you instead is tremendously psychologically damaging. And I cannot comprehend your or @marek 's inability to understand that, except that you just refuse to.

A lot of gun nuts* will rebut the need for gun control by saying "the guns aren't the problem" and frankly, I think we should start agreeing with them--"the problem isn't the guns, it's YOU".

*I'm talking about the fetishists who make gun ownership central to their identity, and adopt right-wing politics as a result.
