The bar my wife and I went on our first date at was an old steakhouse/lounge from the 70's which hadn't had an interior update in two decades (this was December of 1996, mind you). There was shag carpeting on the inside of the front door. Loved that place.
It won't make the news because only three were shot and only one was killed, and in the U.S. that's nothing; but, well, 3/1 this morning quite literally around the corner from my wife's office, and just when she would have gotten to work. I just now read about it online; I don't yet know if she even knows about it.
Now that you mention it, I did live in an apartment from 1990 to about 1993 that had avocado green appliances...
https://bnonews.com/index.php/2023/02/active-shooter-at-michigan-state-university/ Police and other emergency services are responding to an active shooting at Michigan State University in East Lansing, local officials and witnesses say. The incident began just before 8:30 p.m. on Monday when officers were called for an active shooter at Berkey Hall. When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered multiple victims, including fatalities.
We are going to have to resegregate. I didn't think we'd ever absorb the worst of the majority culture, but it seems to be happening. Since I'm on an ignore list, I don't have to read a bunch of whining about my posts. I can speak truth without concern for blacklisting..
About guns? Not sure that either "we" or "courage" are the appropriate words. We, as in almost everyone here and everyone I know, would like much stricter gun regulations. But people who like guns firmly disagree and they have the votes to prevent such legislation, and the clout to pack the courts with their supporters. I don't think we are being cowardly by not passing gun legislation because we lack the votes. Nor do I think they are cowardly in loving guns. Misguided, uncaring, provincial .. we can find many potential cricitisms. But I don't see how cowardly fits.
So the Michigan State shooting was experienced by several kids who had been in prior school shootings... If there was any sanity left this fact alone should give the "hopes and prayers" clan some pause.
It's hard to put into words what it's like when a town you used to live in (Oxford) goes through a mass shooting. I went up there not too long after it happened to visit family and it was somber to say the least. And Michigan State, there's definitely going to be kids who attended Oxford that will be going through it again. And it's heartbreaking. And now there's people who lived through Sandy Hook and Parkland going through this again. ANd not to make it about gainsaying, but it's telling that nothing was done when 5 year olds, 5 year olds were shot in Sandy Hook. Instead, we get thoughts and prayers and the likes of LaPierre making excuses.
A survivor of the Sandy Hook School mass shooting in 2012 is a student at Michigan State University: “I am 21-years-old and this is the second mass shooting I’ve lived through. We can no longer allow this to happen. We can no longer be complacent.” pic.twitter.com/Jcafl57tmZ— Shannon Watts (@shannonrwatts) February 14, 2023
The majority of the voters favor sensible gun law reform, some reforms (like background checks) with overwhelming support. It is absolutely a lack of will among politicians.
My guess is that any Republican politician who makes a serious effort for gun reform will lose his or her next primary, as Liz Cheney did. So if by calling them "cowards" we mean "being unwilling to commit political suicide," then I guess they are cowards. But honest, this is the voters' fault.
I mean, yeah, it always ultimately falls on the voters. Maybe Im still naive but I expect pols to be more high-minded about things that they actually have a big hand in changing. Especially in regard to senseless violence. Hell, if ebikes were catching on fire and burning yoots crotches, they'd have legislation drawn up in a week. There is virtually no national Republican that either the daily carnage or the mass shootings has moved to get behind even common sense reforms that 80% of Americans want. Some ghouls even wear AR15s on their lapels.
Thanks, John, that is exactly what I was thinking in my prior post by saying WE are cowards as WE make them our elected officials.
Let's be honest on which voters. Not all voters, right? Just the ones that are allowed to vote in the GOP primaries, or at least fail to even show up, letting the crazies captain their ship. EDIT: I just want to make sure everyone understands that Mike Lee is NOT my fault.
