Genesis 34:25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males. Genesis 49:5-7 Simeon and Levi are brothers; their swords are weapons of violence. / May I never enter their council; may I never join their assembly. For they kill men in their anger, and hamstring oxen on a whim. / Cursed be their anger, for it is strong, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will disperse them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel. Joshua 5:2-3 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel once again.” / So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth. 2 Samuel 13:28-29 Now Absalom had ordered his young men, “Watch Amnon until his heart is merry with wine, and when I order you to strike Amnon down, you are to kill him. Do not be afraid. Have I not commanded you? Be courageous and valiant!” / So Absalom’s young men did to Amnon just as Absalom had ordered. Then all the other sons of the king got up, and each one fled on his mule. Exodus 32:27-28 He told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each of you men is to fasten his sword to his side, go back and forth through the camp from gate to gate, and slay his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’” / The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people fell dead. Judges 20:1-48 Then all the Israelites from Dan to Beersheba and from the land of Gilead came out, and the congregation assembled as one man before the LORD at Mizpah. / The leaders of all the people and all the tribes of Israel presented themselves in the assembly of God’s people: 400,000 men on foot, armed with swords. / (Meanwhile the Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah.) And the Israelites asked, “Tell us, how did this wicked thing happen?” ... 1 Samuel 22:18-19 So the king ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests!” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests himself. On that day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod. / He also put to the sword Nob, the city of the priests, with its men and women, children and infants, oxen, donkeys, and sheep. 2 Kings 10:6-7 Then Jehu wrote them a second letter and said: “If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, then bring the heads of your master’s sons to me at Jezreel by this time tomorrow.” Now the sons of the king, seventy in all, were being brought up by the leading men of the city. / And when the letter arrived, they took the sons of the king and slaughtered all seventy of them. They put their heads in baskets and sent them to Jehu at Jezreel. And on and on... in contrast to what Jesus preached. So you can't be a Christian and still think the old testament is worth following. It's like a Jewish comedian once said that he sort of envied Christians because their god as a father mellowed, in contrast to his own god being a vicious, wrathful etc kind of being.
I should add the old testament isnot that different from other scriptures from the region, but in the context of christianity and the stance about death penalty it matters.
I know they have some dark songs but dayum! Robert James Smith identified as Michigan LDS church shooter? Grok names singer as suspect, apologizes for 'glitch'
A general rule I've had for shootings is to not assume an ideology and the closest thing to a pattern is the lost boy trope that Tom Nichols wrote about.
May I remind everyone of the rules…it takes 4 dead to be a mass shooting! Otherwise it’s artisanal random gun violence! Like, 4 people were shot on East Millbrook road in Raleigh, but no deaths, so, artisanal.
The Michigan shooter was MAGA. Online you can find an image of him wearing a Trump shirt and also an image of a Trump sign at his house. https://www.newsweek.com/thomas-jac...support-lds-church-michigan-shooting-10796240 The North Carolina shooter was very mentally ill (he has a lawsuit against Kellie Pickler claiming she poisoned him) and also anti LGBT (he thought the LGBT community and white supremacists* we’re trying to kill him because he’s straight.) https://www.complex.com/music/a/treyalston/shooting-suspect-kellie-pickler-poison *I bet you weren’t expecting that mashup.
You know something is not right when: FBI Director Kash Patel: "We are tracking reports of the horrific shooting and fire at an LDS church in Grand Blanc, Michigan. FBI agents are on the scene to assist local authorities. Violence in a place of worship is a cowardly and criminal act. Our prayers are with the victims and their families during this terrible tragedy." Patel being reasonable? He actually sounds professional there.
How fvkced up (in your head) you have to be to think that the KKK and LGBT got together to try to kill you https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/artic...hooter-identified-as-ex-marine-143921508.html
So he was known to be batshit crazy, but not crazy enough to supercede the Second Amendment, right? Nothing to see here, move along...
Looks to be anti Mormon. He didn't say he wanted to fill the Great Salt Lake with Jolt Cola & drown every Mormon. Just the usual Mormon hate ya see online and stuff When Burton City Council candidate Kris Johns heard that someone shot churchgoers and burned down the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sept. 28 in nearby Grand Blanc, he said not once did he think it was the man he spoke to while canvassing less than a week prior who went on a tirade against the church and described Mormons as "the antichrist." The man was outgoing, polite, and "extremely friendly," Johns said. And his animosity toward the church didn't seem violent, he said — “it was very much standard anti-LDS talking points that you would find on YouTube, TikTok, Facebook.” https://www.freep.com/story/news/lo...shooting-suspect-anti-lds-tirade/86415139007/
Kinda interesting when you consider the talk we just had in the Christianity thread about Mormons not being “true christians.”
Didn’t your recently-deceased President try to discourage using the word “Mormon” to make the Christian connection more front and center for that reason?
They’ve been trying to dissociate from “Mormon” and “book of Mormon” for almost 20years, knowing that the Book of Mormon is problematic. I am not letting them off the hook, and refuse to drop the term, but it still doesn’t justify stochastic violence against congregations. My childhood church was burned down in an apparent vandalism, and possibly protest, incident. I was a bit shocked, as I lived a good portion of my life there. But I wasn’t sad, as my family suffered plenty while in attendance there. What is more sad is that the church grounds had a big softball field and playground that our whole neighborhood pitched in to fund and create, and that is now all ripped out and a new million-dollar-plus housing development has replaced it. And so it goes.
