Here are Howard's first year stats so far.

Season league stats: 23 games, 10 shutouts, 0.74 GAA.

These numbers are great for any keeper, but Timmay is in his first premiership year and young for a keeper. I'm really excited to see him win GK of the year in England.

Ummmm ya know I don't think so. But hey, not bad for a guy that used to play for the metroscum.

Howard did get goalkeeper of the month in the world by World Soccer for December. Not bad at all.

And Friedel and Keller may still be ahead of Howard in the pecking order but that doesn't appear like it's going to last long.

I think Tim Howard has the best reflexes in the world, which is evident if you see some of the rediculous saves he has made this season (and during his time with the Metro for that matter).

However, I also think that a lot of goal keeping has to do with experience, and knowing what you're going to be doing in different situations. Tim isn't there yet, which is evident if you see his come out on crosses some times. He also needs to work on his punching. I can think of two horrible mis-punches that put tim into some bad situations, but luckily his extra-terrestrial reflexes bailed him out both times...

(The crawl and get a mit up out of nowhere vs Chelsea, and last week against southampton where he saved that bicycle kick attempt... he didn't really have any business with either of them)

So, in my estimation, it is only a matter of time before his experience is on par with his reflexes... Then, tim howard will be the greatest goal keeper in the world.

Howard has done well, but he is certainly not the best in the world. He hasn't been with Manchester United and while he has done a good job he is NOT the best keeper in the world.

Hey my favorite teams have a pecking order:
    1. Seattle Sounders (Local Side)
    2. D.C. United (favorite domestic side)
    3. Manchester United (favorite world club team)

I don't hate Howard but I can't ever forgive him for being a metroscum. Just a small streak of bad luck in a great career.

Exactly what Deuter says. His reflexes are incredible, but still needs more experience in the decision making department. His save on the bicycle kick was something from outer space, but he wouldn't have been in that position had he cleared the cross. Also, from what I have seen, he has distributed the ball to his field a few times to his field players in tight positions without much room for them to work with. All in all, I am very proud of him and has done a tremendous job this year. Once it all comes together....."Then, tim howard will be the greatest goal keeper in the world"

How meaningful do you think this contribution is to the appraisal of Tim Howard's goalkeeping abilities? Do you really think anyone at all cares about your puffed-up attempts to demonstrate your DC United bonafides, offering nothing else?

Why don't you spare us all, and just stand at bus stops, mumbling these non-sequiturs to yourself?

I think Howard is the best US keeper. I saw some of Oliver Kahn's highlights recently and think he is number 1 in the world. I am very impressed with the goalkeeping in general in the EPL.

tim howard is not and neither is oliver kahn (2 years ago, yes).

tim is young, and i have no doubt that he can become the best in world, but not right now. he has too much to learn.

It's been said that this may be Fergie's direction. Because earlier in the season he was making incredible passes, he would start an attack move from goal.

I agree with most of what has been said above. If I needed a keeper to make a world class save day in and day out, I would pick Howard as one of the top 3-5 in the world hands down (I mean it is very difficult to say, one person is number 1 and one person is number five based really on anything other than mere speculation ...I think it is easier to say he is top 3 or he is top 5).

I mean as was mentioned above his stop on the bicycle kick was ridiculous as was the crawl.

That all being said he has made some blunders at United this year. He has had a couple of bad clearances on attempted punches that just didn't go far enough. He has had a couple of outlets were he put the defender under way too much pressure and it resulted into a pretty decent counterattack. But hey no one is perfect every single game. He is learning and in about 2-3 years, I belive this portion of his game will improve immensely.

Until that point he is not the best keeper in the world. I think he clearly is in the top 15-20 of the position. Friedel's form last year put him in the top 3, but his form this year has been very good, but not as spectacular as last year. Keller has been very good this year and has made several brilliant saves, but has also made more than what I would consider a usual number of blunders for him. In other words, I put Friedel in the top 20 with him, Keller.....I don't know where he falls, but my guess is that it is outside the top 20 now.

Howard will improve. When he does, he will be consistently in the top 3 in the world.

The question you have to ask yourself in my mind is this........

If Manchester United could make a player for player trade........who would they trade Howard for? I can't think they would trade that many keepers for Howard. They see his shot stopping ability, he just needs a little more experience and a little work at punching the hell out of the ball, and he will be one of the best, if not the best.

Ahh, makes sense. It did seem like he did it so much against Sohon that it was way too predictable. In several cases, an opposing player was within a few feet of Timmy's teammate as soon as the ball reached his feet. Well, hopefully, Fergie gives a little more freedom in the near future...

You just told him to chill out. Bigsoccer posters continue to amaze. I know I should be used to it, but it's one of those things that will always amaze you.

Anyway, an earlier poster made an interesting comment. Who would ManU trade Howard for? Are we talking about a world class field player? If you were ManU, who would it take for you to trade Timmy?

Yikes, you probably have some ritalin you didn't take he could borrow...

This is something I forgot to mention earlier: Sometimes Howard does seem to roll the ball out into bad situations. I also think he is doing this at the direction of Sir Alex or more likely Roy Keane. THey want him to play it easy instead of relying on a huge 50/50 ball. This is something else that just comes down to experience, he just needs to learn to read what situations are ok for the short throw...

On the other hand I remember several times when he threw a bomb out to ronaldo who was streaking down a touchline that resulted in very dangerous looking counter attacks...

Tim Howard has all the fundamentals plus phenominal ability... he just needs practice and experience...

Really, I think he just has some kind of Southampton jinx...

I think MLSNTOWN meant a keeper for keeper swap...

I'm Bi-polar not ADD. (Insert joke about me here) let's move on to the topic. I think Timmy is a great keeper but Man U has a great (well...) defense to help him out. Also he is out of position occasionally (keyword occasionally) but he has the athleticism to make up for it. Kinda like he did in the last game against Southampton.

They're good numbers indeed, but let's face it, Timmay hasn't exactly had the most action back there. Some games, it's like he should maybe take up a hobby back in the box, like origami or needlepoint.

Anyone seen any stats that factor in the number of shots on goal versus the number of saves?

I think that he has been busier making saves since Rio has been out.

Perhaps, but I was wondering how important he is to ManU. I'm sure he's not worth as much as RVN or Scholes, but is he worth as much to ManU as Raul is to Real? Saviola to Barcelona? Ballack to Bayern?
