I have very little knowledge of how the political system works.....are you saying that if the mayor vetos the project, the council can't immediately override the veto? Would it automatically mean there has to be more meetings? Just curious. If that is the case, I hope they would schedule an extra meeting before the end of the year....they obviously see how important the timing is.
I would hate to see The Wizards move so far from their own training ground- At Bannister there can be a real sense of community and belonging developed. People near the location could really see immediate change and help make a home and long lasting relationship with the team and FO. Just be a shame to see these thing fall through now- it just makes so much sense!
I've pasted below the Veto procedure from the city charter. The Mayor has 7 days to return the council passed ordinance with explanation. The council then must meet again to over ride with 8 votes. One good news is that even with a veto the ordinance is considered active unless the council fails to override within two meetings after. The uncertainity would not be good though.
Dusty, your continual updates and knowledge of the city council system of government is very helpful. Many of us are unfamiliar with the processes involved. Thank you for your insight and legal clarifications. I have spread too much rep, but I owe you rep when I get my rep batteries recharged.
Gotcha covered. I guess another good thing is that once the veto is overturned, the mayor can't veto it again. I wondered about that before as well.
In that regard it's exactly like the Senate overriding a presidential veto. The whole checks and balances thing.
Man, sometimes the political process is so painful to watch. My heart goes out to y'all up there. Here's hoping that the council passes things veto-proof today and/or tomorrow. It should make it pretty apparent that Funkhouser vetoing it is pointless, and he'll back down.
Does anyone have any updates from today's meetings? I took my last vacation day of the year to go last week, so I am stuck at work, looking here waiting for news.....
What he said. So, then I assume the 3:00 Thursday meeting is still on? Anyone planning on attending that full City Council meeting?
http://cityclerk.kcmo.org/liveweb/D...q8tp3Uzz5VMY0+agURKFnLJOnwSsmGWlJDQt1VgIvmsJO The docket is now an advance and do pass for tomorrow 3:00 pm. I suspect the Funk mostly did not know what he was talking about with Super TIF. It was always only required IF the worst case financing materialized. The 'Waterfall' beyond the 10% requested rate of return would be redirected to city coffers. Still I'm glad he is now on board and On Goal looks likely to break ground on time. Whew! P.S. Dear Funk. What was that all about.
Great news for all of you down there in KC! Is that the last real hurdle to clear in this process? Are there any other sticking points? What I am trying to ask is...Does this almost gaurantee completion of a new Wizards stadium? Again...Congrats!!!
The actual city council vote is tomorrow, but getting the mayor on board was the critical hurdle. I will feel much better tomorrow afternoon once the announcement is made, but..... for right now.
Awesome news, I imagine that noise I just heard was a collective sigh of relief among the small group I drag with me to games. I may have to consider using some leave tommorow and trek out to the meeting. Any ballpark on how long those things usually run?
With a faint echo from MLS and stadium watchers all over the country and planet! Congratulations, guys! Second time's a charm! Wow. What a roller coaster. I'm seriously excited for y'all.
This was mentioned in the article: "But a late amendment that would give the city the opportunity to remain engaged with the financing of the project while it is being reviewed for state assistance persuaded the mayor to drop his objections. “The items in this amendment represent a reasonable deal for the city,” Funkhouser said. “This gives us time to stay engaged with the developer and get the support from the state it deserves.” The mayor also said he now agrees with supporters of the project that state financial assistance for the project required the city to authorize super TIF. The financing plan for Three Trails includes about $30.8 million in state tax increment financing and tax credits." I guess somebody had to shine the light up his a$$ to get him to see the light. Congrats to the person who had the big flashlight!
Great news. Hope to see some of you tomorrow at the meeting. If all goes as planned we could meet afterwards for a happy hour drink to celebrate.
I'll be out at CAB picking out my seat at 3:00, so hopefully I will get the news straight from Sam via his blackberry (assuming the word will be spread from the FO when it happens).
Make sure you're there tomorrow, if at all possible. 3 pm. City Hall (12th and Oak downtown). 26th floor. Get there early... there's going to be a crowd. This is it ladies and gents, the big one! And may I just say, for the record, .
