http://www.uefa.com/competitions/UEFACup/FixturesResults/Round=1976/Match=79710/index.html 2nd game for Standard. currently last place with 0 pts. definitely needs a result for them to have a chance.
Ouch, Deflandre caught a flu! Gooch will have a hard time the jugulate the right lane without the captain beside him.
If Standard get the win, they are still very much alive to advance to round of 32. But they do need a win. I'm not worried about their defense today (be surprised if Parma could put in more than one goal), but their sorry-ass offensive is going to make life difficult. 1-0 would be a GREAT result for Liege, and if they need to score more then one goal to win...well......(fingers/toes crossed)..
i thought i was getting this one one rai uno, but no such luck - i may get an extended highlight package later on the belgian channel
I'd think if score is tied or Liege behind...Gooch gets sent forward a lot in the 2nd half...they gotta have this one (win), and settling for a tie would be silly strategy IMO in a 5 team group and only 4 games with 2 at home (need 3 pts in home games, absolutely)...
Those of you who understand Italian can hear the game on RAI Radio 1 at http://www.socceraudio.com/italy.htm click on the Radio 1 logo to the right of the main body of the text.
0-1 in 44th minute. Andrea Pisanu scores for Parma. A minute or two later Tchite shoots high for Standard from just outside the penalty area. halftime The Italian audio is focusing on Parma's players. They all get much more mentions than any Standard players. Matcthracker in French is available at: http://www.sport.be/fr/football/tournament/statgame.html?comp=2221&game=87109
Liege is deep do now. With their weak offense, 2 goals in a half is a real burden. They have to go for a win now- and fight as if the next round depended on it, so I'd think Gooch is upfront a lot more now..... Game is going to open up (Standard attacking in force, Parma on the counter)...would be fun to see...that is, if Standard doesn't let up the 2nd
55' Standard ties it up with a mid-range shot from Geraerts. "Imprendibile" which I believe means "unstoppable". A few minutes later it sounds like Gooch just misses converting a goal on a quick re-start as Parma argued with ref. Another good shot from Geraerts as Parma is back on it's heels. Crowd is roaring and Baldini, the Parma coach makes a 2nd sub (59') bringing on Mark Bresciano, a midfielder, for Massimo Maccarone, a forward.
Standard dominating. Geraerts has a goal ruled offsides. Parma makes it's 3rd substitution, Fabio Simplicio for Alessandro Budel. Announcers mention "optimo dribbling de Onyewu avanti" (or something like that) - a nice dribble forward by Gooch. 66'
Crud. The Italian audio is switching to Lazio - Partizan Belgrade that is just starting. Now they switch back. Sounds like they may switch back and forth. Standard - Parma has gotten chippy as the ref has been issuing cards - Grella for Parma at 71', Curbelo for Standard at 73', Marchionni for Parma at 76', and then Leonard for Standard at 76'.
Parma's Ruopulo has goal called back for offsides. Then moments later, misses what sounds like a great chance for go-ahead goal. Nice save from Runje. Clamoroso! Yellow for Bresciano (Parma). Berti makes a big save for Parma - off another shot from Geraerts. 85'
Argh...goal at death desperately needed. A tie here means they would have to win at Bestikas (or they are basically out), which is low odds to say the least
Annoyingly, the Italian audio switches to the Lazio game during injury time. Then comes back for the final seconds as a little extra has been added due to injury time stoppages. On the last play of the game, Standard takes a free kick after a Cannavaro foul. AND SCORES!!!! 2-1 Standard FT - I believe Garbini converted the free kick. Woo hoo!!!! Sounded like a great match. If anyone who actually saw it wants to add details, it would be appreciated. Or if someone wants to translate the Matchtracker from French at: http://www.sport.be/fr/football/tournament/statgame.html?comp=2221&game=87109 With 3 points from 2 games, Standard is back in the thick of it in UEFA Cup's Group B. Still have games with Besiktas and Athletic Bilbao remaining.
Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss! GOAL AT THE DEATH! Sweet..........They are right in the thick of it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooch edit: I'm reading thru the French ticker, and their final comment was the Standard thoroughly deserved the victory based on their strong 2nd half..
very good chance of advancing... current standing Group B Pld Pts Steaua 3 6 Besiktas 2 3 Athletic 2 3 Standard 2 3 Parma 3 3 who would of think Parma would not advance in this group?
Right before the goal in the first half, and at the 42 minute mark...Gooch was called the best player on the pitch..
Parma is not very good this year. 3rd from the bottom in Italy (I think they had to sell some players due to the Parmalat scandal), but doing better lately (6 pts in last 4 games)...Likely, they won't relegate, but they won't be better then mid-table (at best) this year. G. Rossi- the Yank/not Yank- was a young Parma stud that likely got sold to Man. U earlier then normal because of the Parmalat scandal.
In all likelihood, they will HAVE to win their last game at home against Athletic to really seal the dea.. But that was pretty much ALWAYS the case. Getting a point at Besiktas certainly would make life easier/most interesting, even opening up weird possibilities (low odds) of a home tie in last game even being enough. Could come to pass if a couple surprises happen...
don't forget 3 teams advance to next round... Right now, i believe standard is losing by goal differentials but this might change if Athletic loses next game.
