I liked it, even if pretty much all of England's film critics hate it; I got to see a sneak preview of it Saturday; the visual effects were great, Hans Zimmer's music was top-notch, and even though it veered into camp a bit too often, the acting of Sir Ben as The Hood, Sophia Myles (Penelope) and Ron Cook's Parker were most enjoyable. Thoughts from anyone across the pond who has seen it, or over here who won passes to the previews of it this past weekend? Paul
The previews look stupid and I am sure I won't pay to see it. On another note the creators of South Park are in the works on a movie called "Team America", it will be a spoof of the Thunderbirds TV show and involve "SuperMariantion" puppets like the show.
it looks terrible. then again, there is a miniscule chance that it could be good. But frankly, I'm past the age where kiddy humor and neon green spaceships makes for a good bit of entertainment.
Someone is sounding their age. I havent seen it yet but I can't see why the reviews are so bad if Charge is telling the truth. Get some nice seens of London in it don't you?
Friday update from Boxofficemojo.com: Just $950,000 (estimated) in 2,057 theaters, which averages a disastrous $462 per screen. And since its budget was *$70 million*, this is going to rank as one of the biggest bombs of the year, if not the new century. Those are 'Gigli'-esque numbers. You may be seeing the DVD before Columbus Day. They will be lucky to see north of $3 million before Sunday is over. Fsck, even Harold and Kumar go to White Castle will beat it, $-wise. Now that I've had a week to reflect, I can see why Gerry Anderson steered clear of this; it took Hollywood almost a decade to cleanse itself of the 'Home Alone' formula for family movies; now we're in a phase where everyone wants to duplicate Spy Kids. And this time, it struck out. There were plans for two sequels; they may be in limbo now, if not scrapped altogether. A shame, since I was old enough to enjoy the original TV show. Paul Paul
I have to say, my first thought was "cool"! Then I saw a preview. The "spy kids" theme really turned me off.
Boxofficemojo: $2.65 million estimated, not even in the top 10 for the weekend. For those wondering, Gigli opened with $3.8 million on its debut weekend. So yeah, the numbers were worse than the worst movie of 2003. http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2004&wknd=31&p=.htm Paul
Just revealed today on Ebert and Roeper----- Two thumbs WAY DDOWN for what they called one of the worst films of the year and then went on to say it can only be appealing to a 5 year old who likes bright colors.
The final tally on Thunderbirds' U.S. boxoffice: just $6,331,140. According to boxofficemojo.com, it ended its run on Thursday. Paul
