hasn't been brought up, but did anyone see that push-punch to guavara....

anyone think brian hall was scared of zach to show him the red.

it was one of the most obvious red cards i've seen... mls has to fine and suspend thornton in light of the previous suspensions of players for things a lot less obvious and intentional....

and no, i'm not just saying this because we lost. ;)

Well lets make it clear it was a push...not a punch. Amado had his arms wrapped around Zachs neck...Not exactly sure why. Zach should be fined and suspended...Amado should have been cautoned for instigation.

Well, Zach isn't exactly Hristo here. He's not known for that kind of behavior. My guess is that Brian Hall knows exactly what Guevara did to start the fracas and that's why Thornton was still on the field after that. Still, Zach should have just told Guevara "What's the score again? Good, now shut up."

Guevera was trying to get out of the goalmouth and Thornton was delaying him. Guevara put his arm on Thornton to move him out of the way. Thornton was stalling and then pushed Guevara. Should have been a red card to Thornton. Once again, MLS refs are spineless.

Sorry, but Guevera was NOT trying to get out of the goal mouth. He was trying to keep Thornton from getting to the ball before the other Metrostar player, because Zach would have taken much more time with it than the Metros would have. I agree with Hall thinking that he instigated it. That seems consistent with past calls.

It was a shove and Thornton should have been red-carded. No doubt. No idea why he wasn't.

Guevera should have got a yellow for getting in Thorntons way but any time a player retaliates by shoving a player like Zach did - he should be tossed.

If MLS refs wonder why they get no respect - they need look no further than this.

When I was watching my first thought was Guevara yellow, Thornton red.

Although, its pretty common that a team down by a goal or two late in the game that scores is going to come after the ball. Therefore I find it hard to believe that Guevara "instigated" the situation. He simply wanted the ball. We've all seen this many times, Guevara wanted the ball, not to start a fight. Why would he want to waste more time than a goal already takes?

That said, he did have his arm around Thornton's neck.

It seemed a lot different to me.

It appeared that Guevarra was trying to get the ball out of the net to make the restart and Zach was trying to block him/slow down the play. It then appeared the Guevarra wrapped his arm around Zach's neck to get Zach away from the ball so someone else could get it out of the net, which is when Zach went ballistic.

Although Guevarra was shoved in the chest, he clutched his face as if he had just gotten punched, obviously embellishing the situation. Although the shove was pretty powerful, Zach didn't come close to his face. I think Hall let Zach continue playing because of the obvious instigation of Guevarra and the embellishment of Guevarra when he went down.

At the risk of drawing the wrath of my fellow Fire fans, I have to admit, I had the very same reaction at the time.

    You're right.

Besides, don't forget that 3 Guevaras fit in such an impressive frame as Zach's...

MLS must discipline the "big one".

Nope, Etienne got it 100% right. If anything, Guevara should have received a yellow for instigating. Zach was patient for a few seconds with the half pint strapped across his back. They got no business in his goal. The ref will account for time wasting if they fail to get the ball the center circle in an appropriate time.

No wrath, just agreement. My first thought was, "Damn, he almost went THROUGH the net." My second was, "Ok, Thornton's gone, well, at least we will get to see the new keeper we picked up." Guevara played a major part in the incident and should have recieved a yellow, but Hall might have decided, "I'll give Zach the yellow and Guevara nothing and it will balance out." But who really knows what MLS refs are thinking at any given time. Other than that incident, Hall reffed a pretty decent game.

You know, just making a point here, but Brian Hall was right there, and lord knows what may have been said by Guevara or Zach while this play was happening, or what wasn't caught by the camera in close quarters.

Just saying: Hall had a lot better perspective on the play than anyone at home or in the stadium.

That's the key point here: You absolutely cannot say "Hall was out of position" on this one.

Otherwise I thought Hall had a fine game, but I agree with yellow/red scenario for Guevara/Zach.

On a somewhat tangential piont, is anyone else tired of watching players scramble for the ball after a late goal when a team is still down? Really, there's nothing more rediculous. The game won't restart until the teams are set anyway, and usually the scramble for the ball just ADDS time taken away rather than saving any.

I seem to see this more in MLS than in any other league as well, though maybe that's just cause I watch more MLS games.

any player that pushes like that needs to be thrown out. yellow for words. red for actions.

i still think hall was afraid.

I thought another player was going to get the ball, and that Guevara (is it really pronounced "gay-varra", as Stoner said all game?) may have been holding onto Zach to keep from falling over (I mean, seriously, if he thought for a second he could seriously keep Thornton from going where he wanted to go, he's delusional), and Zach (who was, understandably, ticked anyway about them scoring) finally had enough.

After it was sorted out, you could see Thornton hold up his hand (I don't know to whom he was gesturing) as if to say (at least it seemed that way to me), "Yeah, my bad, I lost my head." Maybe not. But considering he rarely talks anyway, I don't know that we'll find out what was said.

I was amazed Guevara didn't go through the side netting (those things must be strong), but then to see his little chippy ass writhe around like my betta does when I take him out of his bowl in a net so I can clean it was just too much.

I hope you guys in Section 8 have a nice reception planned for Guevara on the 28th.

    distribution

i thought zach's distribution of the little gnat into the net was his best of the day...

how far would he have gone if not for the saftey net being there? 5, maybe 10 yards? maybe a new event for the mls allstar weekend?

As mentioned in the Fire forum...

If Thornton really wanted to hurt Guevara, the Metros would be due an allocation this morning.

    Re: distribution

Pepsi presents Guevara tossing at the MLS All-Star Half Time. ;)

I was surprised that Thorton wasn't ejected, but Guevara looked like he had a part in it also. What they heck was he doing holding onto Thorton?

I also have to wonder- who would have given Zack more distance on his toss? Richie Williams or Guevara?

Between Guevera being tossed by Thorton, and Trembly doing who knows what by running into Brown the goalkeepers really established their physical presence this weekend.

In a "Steel Goal" wrestling match, who would win- Zack or Brown?
