First of all, before I start bashing Perry let me say that I might go to this. It looks a heck of a lot more promising than last year's K-Rock-style sludgefest. But... if Morrissey is the headliner, this will be the worst-attended Lollapalooza ever. You've got him, two semi-big names in Flaming Lips and SY, and a whole bunch of second-stage acts in PolySpree, Le Tigre, BMRC, String Cheese, Modest Mouse, etc. Do they plan on putting European critics on barges and floating them to attend these shows? There have to be bigger names on this show that this, especially if they're going to two days. But why announce anything before you've secured the top of the bill? Though note that they're already said that ticket prices will be lower -- maybe this really is it, and it'll be me and about 2,000 other people at the Arts Center in Holmdel mope-dancing to "Suedehead".
Don't underestimate the size of String Cheese Incident's fanbase. SCI probably pulls bigger crowds regularly than just about anybody on that tour. They've routinely sold out or nearly sould out venues around here of anywhere from 2,000 to 7,000 people. On their summer tours they usually headline in some of the biggest amphitheatres around like Alpine Valley, Deer Creek, etc.
I forgot to mention that it is a very interesting lineup and if it comes this way, I will probably go if the tickets aren't just ridiculous.
The fact that Morrissey will be there automatically eliminates it from being considered the best one ever.
This man amuses me people: You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to amerifolklegend again.
I like big festivals. Roskilde is a great one. This is the band list from last year... now THIS is a real music festival. http://www.roskilde-festival.dk/object.php?obj=17f000c&code=1
i saw an article where they are going to be playing two dates in each city which will be tough in amphiotheaters, i also heard a rumor it will be in smaller venues
They can't play 25,000-seat ClearChannel / SFX sheds with that lineup, but a tour of "non-traditional" venues would likely be too expensive and risky. ("Field Day", anyone?) I'm convinced that there has to be more to it than this.
PJ Harvey and Le Tigre have been added. So we've got a main stage of, in my best guesstimate order of headliners: Morrissey String Cheese Incident Sonic Youth Flaming Lips Modest Mouse PJ Harvey Black Rebel Motocycle Club Gomez Polyphonic Spree Le Tigre As a side note, Morrissey began his solo tour a couple of nights ago. Smiths songs included "A Rush and a Push...", "The Headmaster Ritual", and "There Is A Light..." , and "Hand In Glove".
More info, new acts, new dates here and here. The lineup by date for the SF shows: Day 1 Morrissey Sonic Youth Modest Mouse Le Tigre Black Rebel Motorcycle Club The Von Bondies Broken Social Scene The Walkmen Wolf Eyes Danger Mouse The Datsuns Bumblebeez 81 The Secret Machines Day 2 String Cheese Incident Flaming Lips Gomez The Polyphonic Spree The Thrills The Coup STS9 Elbow Wheat Dresden Dolls No word on which day PJ Harvey is playing, though I'd assume it's Day 2 based on those lineups.
In today's NY Times: Pixies headline Lollapalooza at NYC's Randall's Island on August 17th. Not sure which day this would be; I would assume Day 2. If they are playing the whole tour, Perry has the necessary Big Name Act.
Lollapalooza has been CANCELLED! http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=529&e=2&u=/ap/20040622/ap_en_mu/music_lollapalooza Poor ticket sales apparently.
I'm not too surprised. The four biggest acts -- Morrissey, SY, Pixies, and Flaming Lips -- all appeal more to people my age than to the college-aged kids who can take a weekday off and don't mind baking on the hot sun for 8+ hours. SCI may have a decent-sized fanbase but why would they pay $50 for this amphitheater-sized show when they'll return to the road right after this is over and play smaller venues? My only hope is that this means the Gomez / Poly Spree side-tour will be expanded. They are the two acts I most wanted to see.
The CIA put pressure to cancel the fest after Morrisey's comments about wishing Bush and not Reagan had died. [/wacko conspiracy theorist]
When I heard this lineup, I thought this might happen. I could swear I remember them almost canceling the show a couple years ago. This is the worst Lollapalooza lineup ever. It's also the smallest number of big acts, as I recall. Lollapalooza used to have some of the greatest acts ever touring with it... the greatest of the time even. I mean, look at the lineup from the first tour: Jane's Addiction, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Living Color, Nine Inch Nails, Fishbone, Violent Femmes, Ice-T/Body Count, Butthole Surfers, Rollins Band I know some of those were only at a few dates... but when it passed through Chicago... well, Tinley Park anyway, it was huge, and everyone I knew was excited. It's weird though... I could swear New Order and Depeche Mode were there too... was that another tour? [tangent]All I know is that I used to live kind of near Tinley Park, and I remember hearing both Depeche Mode and New Order from my house before the World Music Theater changed its sound system[/tangent] In truth, the 2003 show had a pretty dodgy lineup. This is, seriously, the worst though, and I'm not surprised a bit.
Looks like your prediction came true! hehehe. Seriously though, I didn't even have tickets for this festival (I'll be out of town the evening it was supposed to be in LA) but I was really sad when I heard about this yesterday. Perry was moving it back in the right direction (Flaming Lips, SCI, Sonic Youth) Quality, quality lineup. It's a shame the general public wasn't interested in this. I could've gone last year but stayed away b/c the lineup was so horrid (the exception being Audioslave maybe, but even then I'm a bigger Cornell fan than Audioslave really)
