How many Steve Martin movies have you seen?

not to say he didn't make some racially insensitive movies more than 25 years ago, or that some of those movie lines might get quoted (perhaps again insensitively) on the internet.

the "new phonebooks" joke was quite good/appropriate for this thread. beyond that, it's gone off-track and probably could stand to be dropped and allow the focus to turn to all matters MLS scheduling related.

I have seen no Steve Martin movies.

The guy is freakin 57 years old. His first movie was made like 10 years before some of us were even born.

Seriously the comment, line, whatever, was out of line in my opinion. And I'm sorry but I fail to see how some white guy talking about being born poor or black has any humor.

God the 70s must have been aweful.

A moderator should know better, as there are all kinds of people who read BigSoccer of all ethnicities, ages, etc.

Not everyone is in some "inner circle" of guys who watched movies in th 70s-80s.

The fact that you have such contempt for one of the most creative men of the late 20th century really underscores how little you should be taken seriously.

The man has won an Emmy, a Grammy, a Mark Twain Award and been a best-selling author. The Jerk is humor, comedy, satire, a joke, something to laugh at. But the key to finding things funny is to stop taking yourself so seriously. Thank God people like Steve Martin have done that so successfully over the ages.

this is all well and true.

but even "harmless" or "satire" movie quotes, perhaps taken out of context, are not always the best or most useful thing. someone who has not seen the movie will easily read the line as "more offensive" and "less appropriate" than someone who has seen the movie. it's simple. there's no more jumping to conclusions by one party (hey, that's offensive) compared to another party (hey, everyone should have seen that movie and be cool with the quote).

or perhaps the key to understanding people is to not think that everything is a joke that everyone can feel good about.
