Let me start this post by saying that the Milwaukee thing should NEVER have been swept under the rug, and somebody should have been taken to JAIL for DEFRAUDING THE FANS. For the record I have paid for my ticket every game I have attended this year, and I have yet to sit in the seat as I prefer to either be behind the goal or in the beer garden on the stage with friends. So I pay for my tickets and don't even use my seat. So you are wrong there. Anyway, this is why we complain. How hard is it for the league to put the correct schedule up. I just received word that the Detroit-Monterrey game is NOT on Thursday night. So I did a little investigating. It is on the league site, Detroit's schedule site and Monterrey's schedule site all as February 7th at 8:35pm in Monterrey. Hell it's even on all of the scrolling dashboards as being tomorrow night. Well guess what. The game is not being played tomorrow night. It is being played on SUNDAY NIGHT. Could the league explain this one to anybody? Of course not. That would take effort from somebody, and like that's going to happen. The only place I could find any evidence of this game being played Sunday night was on Monterrey's site in SPANISH. I don't speak Spanish, but I can use babelfish or whatever the site is, and I also know some Spanish words from high school. That's right, it sure as hell looks to me like that says SUNDAY FEBRUARY 10th against the Detroit Ignition at 6pm. Congratulations MISL leader Steve "The Walking Trainwreck" Ryan. Another example of disgrace for the league brass. Congratulations, you have outdone yourself comissioner, making the only notion of a game switch for a league game on a team site in spanish. This league never ceases to amaze me at boneheaded moves, but this one is definitely way up on the list.
It was a bigger defrauding of fans when the league made Monterrey forfeit 12 games (8 of which they already lost) because they couldn't tell the difference between Renato Pereira and Renato Pereira Candido -- for two months! Or canceling the All-Star Game twice. Or (more or less) canceling the playoffs midseason two straight years. Imagine Congress's reaction if MLB or the NFL did that. There would be hearings from now til Kingdom Come. If Rich finishes his MISL retrospective, he can write a sequel on what a screwed up league the NPSL/MISL is. But having said all that, I don't think the Milwaukee thing is that big of a deal. We called it out at the time, but now we should move on.
And of course, since we know the MISL front office reads this board, all the mistakes have magically been corrected and no notice of Thursday February 7th actually exists anymore. No explanation whatsover. Gotta love it.
Why are you complaining about the MISL correcting the mistake? I think you need some perspective. This isn't like an automobile company making a mistake and building a defective car that kills people. This is a mistake on an indoor soccer league schedule that was eventually corrected. No one died. No one was even harmed.
It wasn't a mistake, it was a rescheduled game. There are presumably people with tickets that say February 7 and the website said February 7 until a few minutes ago. The LEAST they could do is post a press release detailing the change.
Okay, I can understand being upset about a schedule change. That's understandable. But are you going to bring this up again a year from now and still beat it to death? That's my point. There are plenty of mistakes, errors, and misjudgements that happen in this league just about every week. We take the time to discuss it on this forum. People voice their opinions either pro or con. But then we all let it go. So why are their certain things that happen that can't be let go? And why would you feel that someone would need to "go to jail" over it? Come on. It's absolutely ridiculous that the Milwaukee thing is still brought up. Let it go already. Just like the 1000's of other things that have been wrong with the league since it's inception. And why would you define a team by one event that didn't turn out right, when they have been a flagship franchise in this league for 24+ years. If that's the only fault you can find in the Milwaukee franchise, then you are really stretching my friend. I am not saying that you can't voice your opinion when something happens that you don't agree with. What I am saying is that too much time is spend on negative topics instead of positive topics. And one last thing, I am glad that you pay for your tickets. It shows that you do truely support your team. But there are plenty of others on this forum that would only go to a game if they got free tickets. But yet, feel they have the right to tear apart teams at will. Bottom line is that we need to know when enough is enough.
What's better than complaining about a botched Wave promotion a year ago? Complaining about complaining about a botched Wave promotion a year ago. I, for one, would like to complain about complaining about complaints about a botched Wave promotion a year ago. Who would like to complain about my complaints?
If this doesn't make sense to you the way I put it (just a recursion on complaining) I'll put it another way. For someone that said earlier today, "But then we all let it go. So why are their certain things that happen that can't be let go?", with all due respect you're distinctly not letting it go.
But I am not the one that brought this topic back up again (ie. Wave halftime contest). That is what this whole thread was about. So I really don't have a problem letting it go. And the fact that I have posted two or three times about it today does not make me a cronic complainer. At least my posts aren't insanely ridiculous. You have to give me that.
Stuff like that will probably get thrown out there every now and again until perpetuity... easiest thing to do would be to just grit your teeth, bear it and let it pass. When people start debating it, it'll just stir it all up again and become even more the focus of discussion... which would completely defeat the purpose you wish for. Accept that little bit of embarrassment that comes with it for the short term, and be happy it'll be buried by tomorrow... or at least that's my philosophy, whether it's even worth two cents is debatable.
Kevin - They don't read they simply post. Kevin is right though, if you guys would simply let me and Dave K grumble about the scam that happened in Milwaukee it probably would slide under the radar. But they can't help themselves. They are deluded into 'defending their team and their sport' without realizing its exactly these insane scams that are undermining the whole thing. Sponsors are running to the hills. This Wave scam was a crime. The fact the media didn't care, is a serious red herring that this sport is on a death spiral. Thanks to the Wave screwing their fans over and Steve Ryan asleep at the switch. You guys honestly think if they are gonna gyp a small child out of a disney world trip they won't water down your beer? or sell you a t-shirt that will shrink at the slighest touch of water? or buy in hot dogs made from 100 percent British CJD beef? The wave are a bunch of snakes. Living in a league that is dying, and defended by guys who put their heads deeper in the sand, hoping the nay-sayers simply 'get over it' or go away.
With regard to insanely ridiculous posts: I don't think attacking someone's character (and attacking the character of a fan, even if they disagree with you) does any good to bring progress to the issue - especially if your espoused philosophy about this issue is that we should try to be positive and see past the faults of the MISL. It comes across as being disingenuous. (Again, respectfully) I don't know that I'd agree that you're always been at the cutting edge of rationality. Consider the implications of this: Several of you just prey on promotional events, don't you? You are the first to come out of the woodwork to put something down, or condemn it. You complain about the league, you complain about owners, you complain about anything that you can find to complain about. If you aren't happy with things that go on in this league, then do something about it. Get a job in the front office somewhere and make change happen. I care about MISL but I'm not sure "getting a job in the front office somewhere and make change happen" is the best solution to this problem. That's assuming bringing progress to the league was the goal of bringing that up, that is - and not getting a cheap shot on people who disagree with you.
Ironically, the only people complaining about "the Wave screwing their fans" and adding to this fish story are not Wave fans. Only the Wave fans know that nobody got "screwed".
I too care about the MISL. My statement was not meant to be a cheap shot to anyone. I am just saying that if people want to see change in this league, and have the know how and the ideas, then they should do something about it. Look to get a job in one of the front offices. It seems a lot of the staff in the front offices are just kids who were hired after an internship, or people who have bounced around from job to job. Granted, not all of the front office staff are these people, but a fair share. So why not put someone in there that has newer ideas, or better ideas, so that the league can get better credibility. That was my point.
It's based on a post I had on the thread by Dave K about the Wave's next promotion on 2/15. I didn't agree with some of the comments that were made about the Wave.
Respectfully, was "You guys probably don't even buy your own tickets to games..." meant to foster dialogue? As a paying season ticket holder, and as someone that travels 40 miles each way to go to indoor soccer games, the methodological collectivism that catalyzes your above statement makes other, more credible statements you make far more easy to dismiss. Nor (imo) is your suggestion regarding critics-into-operators scheme any more credible, in my opinion, than the criticisms levied against the MISL. At least the criticisms are based in consequentialist reality and not based on the superstructure that we are all professional soccer aspirants. I already have a professional gig, and between working full-time, going to graduate school full-time, and volunteering when I get the chance working in the front office isn't on my list of things to do. But offering suggestions and thoughts through which the MISL can improve to people that can change things is marginally a far more appropriate vehicle to improving the league and the sport. It has always been the right of the fans to attack their sport, just as it is your right to stoke the fires by beating your chest about how phthisical it is. The vociferocity with which this particular humiliating Wave promotion has been assailed is, in my opinion, far more justified than your verisimilitude of being positive through this process - especially when combined with the ad hominem attacks that have come as a package deal in your assertions.
Kenosis - you have a point. The level of indignation some of us have about this is high and maybe unwarranted. I like MISL, I want MISL to succeed. I want a healthy Milwaukee in a healthy MISL. Where I take exception isn't so much the fact that this event happened, but the reaction. In the original thread someone who was at the game clearly mentions that Katie was kind of a last minute stand in and nobody could forsee she was in the final. But what is the real bugbear to me is the Wave after she won, after this former college soccer player beat an 8 year old child for a trip to Orlando (home of DisneyWorld) is the Wave simply shrugged and tried to forget about. Ryan simply shrugged and went "aw shucks" and didn't want to deal with it. This is why I'm ticked off. Indoor soccer deserves better. Meanwhile a player and fiance' go on a free trip and an 8 year old girl sits at home.
my comment about the free tickets wasn't directed at all of you. I understand that there are plenty of people on this forum that buy their own tickets. It was a generalized statement. There are others out there that won't go to a game unless they receive free tickets. Every city in the MISL has them.
Vociferocity, verisimulitude, and ad hominem in one sentence - remind me never to play Scrabble with you.....
Did we ever figure out why the game date changed? I have two possible theories: 1) did not want to go head to head w/ the USA Mexico game as the fans wouldn't come out to the game or 2) Thursday crowds have been shrinking so they want to try a Sunday out. It could be either, a combination, or something else (and I hope nothing is going bad in Monterrey again). Any word out there?
I think what us Wave fans are trying to figure out (and maybe it's just me, who knows) is why this is brought up a year later. I don't see anyone defending the team, saying anything positive about it. All I see is Wave fans asking why the subject is fresh again. It happened last season. Get over it already!! (Alright, there's my two cents. I feel the "love" (not) coming on.)
