67 years ago, October 8, 1956, in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, pitcher Don Larsen of the New York Yankees threw the first perfect game in a World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Yankee Stadium.

I hope this link works. It's the complete broadcast of that game. If your a baseball fan, listening to the names of the players is going to take you on a trip down history avenue.

Any MST3K fan - or fan of low budget sci-fi movies - will appreciate this:

99 years ago, Edward Davis Wood Jr. was born (October 10, 1924 - December 10, 1978).

Glen or Glenda, Jail Bait, Bride of the Monster, Plan 9 from Outer Space (which featured Bela Lugosi, in an extremely small role before he died), among others.

In 1980, he was posthumously awarded a 'Golden Turkey Award ' for Worst Director of All Time.

40 years ago today Joe Altobelli guided the Baltimore Orioles to their most recent World Series win. Eddie Murray broke out of a 2-16 slump to hit 2 HR, series MVP Rick Dempsey hit a HR, Scott McGregor pitched a 5 hit shutout, and the final out was a soft liner to 2nd year SS Cal Ripken.

    Just some local Memphis history

100 years ago today marks the anniversary of the Grand Opera House fire! On the night of Tuesday, October 16, 1923 the Orpheum was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt in 1928. It sits on the corner of Main and Beale.

At one time (60s, I think) there was talk of tearing it down. Fortunately, sane people stepped in.

I swear, we got some stupid-ass people in this town.
