Just some local Memphis history 100 years ago today marks the anniversary of the Grand Opera House fire! On the night of Tuesday, October 16, 1923 the Orpheum was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt in 1928. It sits on the corner of Main and Beale. At one time (60s, I think) there was talk of tearing it down. Fortunately, sane people stepped in. I swear, we got some stupid-ass people in this town.
