Nothing wrong with casual fans long as they're cheering.

    So?

I just dealt with causal fans of the Boston Bruins for the last 2 months. Other than them not knowing the full rules or making dumb comments they are harmless. Sports and teams need casual fans, because they are the ones who will actually go out buy new stuff come every playoff season or championship season.

Every sport needs dieshards, casuals and bandwagoners.

I suppose I believe these casual fans are the reason why World Cup interest have gone up.

True I guess I have diehards fan syndrome where I rag on bandwagoners. But they serve a purpose.

It's better than what we used to see, with Americans showing up to root against the US because "Americans suck at soccer"...

yup. and more than that, if you wear another team's jersey, they'll ask you to change. i've never seen it, but i'm told some guatemala fans ended up in the tree just outside watching the game because they weren't allowed in. another time a guy in an england jersey was asked to flip it inside out.

Yeh the owner has gotten some negative yelp reviews (even to the point of being accused of being racist) because of his attempts to keep it pro-us. Even had an article in the paper before the Honduras game in 2009. But I like that it is Pro-US in a city where most soccer fans aren't. Plus it has good beer (still recovering a little from "Pliny the Elder" from last night).

But back to the original topic I think the idea of people not supporting the US because we "suck" is very much going away. It's not it used to be where Mexico would get 60,000 for a friendly and the US would get 6,000.

yeah, but i'm not much a fan of the really hoppy stuff, so i'm usually stuck with whatever stout or mildly-hoppy pilsner they've got on tap. (at one point my boss told me to "go back to texas with your pilsners and your lagers...")

i didn't know about the yelp reviews, but that's absurd. i'd be surprised to find a pub in newcastle allowing scotland kits or a pub in liverpool allowing wales kits. someone should get on yelp and pretty much just quote what tom says, that he wants that european supporters bar environment. now that i think about it, i can't imagine a bar in dallas where anyone could get away with a 49ers jersey (but i think it'd be tolerated more than the aforementioned soccer kits).

i haven't been following long enough to be one to talk, but in my experience, the number of folks asking "don't we suck?" seems to be on the decline. it's a valid question, i suppose, for someone who doesn't follow soccer, since we have such a solid reputation in other team sports, and historically not so much in soccer. at least it gives you the opportunity to slap them... or if you're not confrontational, at least explain that 22nd out of 208 isn't too bad

Indeed. What's notable here is that a soccer player goofing off with the Dodgers is worthy of a news article...hardly an anti-soccer attitude.

Things I never thought I would hear (read) in my lifetime......

Dryden, Michigan , a small rural community in SE Michigan unable to field an 11 man Football team this season, one of the reasons being SOCCER!

"Fears from concussions, past injuries, time demands, specialization in other sports, academic eligibility issues and the growth of soccer in the Dryden community all contributed, Dryden athletic director and varsity football coach Al Margrif said."

How do you stumble across something that aggressively stupid?

An interesting factoid: I've got this Firefox plugin called "Web of Trust" that warns you if a website has a poor reputation based on user ratings and other factors. This is one of the few non-porn sites to be 100% red.

this last weekend, my son and his better half came up to the central coast and did some wine tasting. I went along as the designated driver since I am not a wine drinker. Stopped at a world famous winery whose owner was a Penn state American Football Player who played pro ball for a few hours and was cut. He gave us the story without us asking and asked if we played and mys son told him we played the real football, the one with a round ball and that his dad played semi pro before any pro leagues were around. Oh this big guy says "the sissy sport"... He turned and walked out holding a goblet of Zinfandel which is world renowned.......

Your son insulted the guy by saying the sport that guy played wasn't the "real" football. And you're surprised that he responded in a negative manner?

While I agree with the sentiment, this was a comment by a child. Unless the kid was being deliberately provocative, an adult should have been able to handle it better.
