Shaqiri played similar minutes to Gio in the seasons preceding his move to MLS (679, 556, 185) and Chicago made him the second-highest-paid player in the league at $8.5 million per season. Reyna would absolutely command a DP salary in MLS.
I see your point, but Gio is subject to the same salary demands as Shaqiri, a Swiss Legend with over 120 caps, who scored goals for clubs like Bayern, Liverpool, Inter and Stoke prior to an MLS move? Based on USMNT fan vibes from 3-4 years ago and a slew of DNPs and injuries in recent times?
I could see around $2 million a year in MLS based on past hype/achievement. He probably wouldn’t be arriving like a Bradley or even an Altidore though.
I don’t know about that. So many question marks. He’s going to have to answer some questions about his health and professionalism before anyone will risk that sort of money on him. And obviously, since we’re talking about MLS, there will be decision makers that hold the behavior of others against him.
Jozy Altidore was getting a DP salary through the end of 2024. He hadn’t played a game since June of 2023 and hadn’t scored more than 4 goals in a season since before Covid. And that salary was on a fresh contract signed with New England in 2022; it wasn’t even a holdover from his Toronto days. All you need is one team of 30 willing to drop $2 million+, and there are a lot of desperate teams in that league.
Panican's repeat after me 'Gio will not be playing in the MLS at the end of the transfer window'. Thank you for the attention to this matter.

I literally just made a joke in a group chat about Tillman to Leverkusen, Reyna to PSV - who says no (besides PSV)? Turns out that might not have been far off reality!
I get the need to balance finances and club success and Gio to PSV makes a lot of sense in some ways. But I cannot imagine Stewart was very happy with how his fed tenure ended.
Being offered up to the Dutch Big 3 is one thing. Being taken up on that offer is a whole other thing. Where would Reyna even stand with Ajax, PSV, or Feyenoord? I guess if Tillman leaves PSV that could create a spot for an attack minded midfielder. At Ajax, would Kenneth Taylor and Davy Klaassen be of similar ilk? Feyenoord just signed Sam Steijn from FC Twente. He's a dynamic goal-scoring midfielder capable of playing left, right, and central. I would his signing would rule out Reyna.
Unfortunately for Gio, no one is going to make a large bet on him right now. Hard to see a top Dutch team spending real money on him given his injury risk and lack of form. A loan to the Netherlands last year would have made a lot of sense. Best case for a purchase is probably a mid-table or europa level Spain/Italy club that views him as depth. I'm not optimistic for Gio, he should probably hold on to the salary but it will make a move this summer very hard. Could see something weird like a 6 month loan with an obligation to buy after X appearances for Gio happening. There is a chance he returns to form with regular playing time but unfortunately I am getting more skeptical by the day. Definitely needs a fresh start somewhere though.
"Being offered up" is not the most encouraging wording. I recently offered myself up to Barcelona, but am still waiting on the call-back. I think the MLS thing gets more likely by the day, but hey, I would love it if he does land at one of the big 2-3 in the Eredivise.
I'm not sure Reyna fits into any category at this point. He's young and experienced, yet hasn't played lately. He's had injury issues but has been relatively healthy lately and has still not played much. At some point someone will have to figure out if he can still play this sport in a relevant way. Edit: To add to that, he also changed positions since he got most of his professional experience. So there really is no way to know whether he can still play at a decent level in Europe
He did switch to that prominent agent Jorge Mendes before the NF move, then recently in last few months it was linked on here that he change mgt again to ROOF sports agency. Someone shared the info on here then, and we all had a good chat about how interesting and/or crazy that was. I don't think he was with that agent for even more than 6 months. EDIT: https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/us...-future-remains-uncertain/blt23f84dafb7ae1dfc It was more than 6 months I think, but this is "his third agent in less than 15 months."
He's going to Utrecht to be Pax' replacement. Yes, I made that up. And also, I stand by it. (make the Big 4 a thing!)
He was an exciting player because of him playing for a top team in the Bundesliga and possibly being a top performer.
Always, always a terrible sign. He wants his current salary (or more) at a CL or an EL side in the Top 5 and, like Wassermann before, Mendes couldn't deliver so Reyna sacks the messenger because he doesn't like the message being delivered.
I don’t think MLS is likely at all given the buy and sell model still doesn’t make as much sense as in any number of Euro leagues. In the Euro market if bought for sub 10M he’s worth the gamble and can be flipped quicker. Some are also exhibiting poor understanding of, um, math by focusing on Gio’s salary for his final year. That should be weighed against signing a new contract upon transfer for 3-4 years which could be a payout this coming season but more money and security over the next 4.
