I could understand him being with BVB if they were going to play him, even if it's only to put him in the shop window. If they're not going to play him, he could at least come to the Gold Cup and train with the national team, to show that he's interested and is working to "come back." Doing nothing makes no sense to me.

2.7 million euros, actually so IMO there's a 50-50 chance he's still there come September 2nd.

€2.7 million isn't a lot but it's not something that's flung about on a wing and a prayer either. When he gets on the field in this tournament, he has to run hard and press aggressively as a minimum and some incision in his play would be nice.

If he can't do that in 20-30 minute cameos late on against Mamelodi Sundowns or Ulsan Hyundai, he's done at this level.

Yeah.I got no idea what is going on save that it's not good for Gio and looks weird even for BVB. Like, how does this make them look good? Got not idea what the thinking is here.

But BVB are paying 2.7 whether Gio plays or not and it doesn't seem like they got any use for him. A loan someplace that covers 500k Euro still nets out a bit for them... And they could likely get more (if he's not somehow busted beyond repair). It's very strange all the way around. Sadly this game stayed close enough that you can't say "BVB will never play him..." and it called for more defensive subs, but still, I got no idea what the plan is here. Just seems odd. Maybe coach/management conflict.

I guess the only vaguely hopeful conspiracy theory is they are putting together a transfer deal and don't want to risk further breakage. I guess that's plausible.

I’m sorry to say, but evidence continues to grow that he is done at this level, and you can’t blame one for speculating there may still be a health issue or previous ones have prevented full recovery. Not much else explains the current situation, Dortmund move players on all the time and should here….unless they can’t get any takers.
I’m bummed about it if so. Another potential USMNT hero whose star may have faded all too soon.

He needs to step down a level but it will be another player who didn’t reach the level we thought they were going to be but he is still young.

We get excited over the potential of a top 5 league quality player but he may not reach a Pulisic level at the end.

Isn't he going into the final year of his contract?

As far as I know his contract is up in ~12 months. My comment was regarding a "worst case" scenario that BVB would not get anything in transfer fees for Gio at this point, They'd still probably be better off loaning him out to someone who would cover some % of his salary (barring accounting and finance intricacies I'm unaware of). If the can't sell him and have no interest in playing him the quoted 500-700 from MLS, for instance, would still be something. Otherwise, they just pay him 2.7 mill to hang out. It's just such a weird situation. I'm guessing/hoping there are negotiations on-going at the moment and that's why they won't even give him token minutes. But who knows.

Yes, but that doesn’t prevent him from going out on loan, clubs just usually don’t do it.

Or let him go for free now and save the 2.7

Dortmund is on the hook for that salary unless Reyna agrees to a mutual termination, and there’s no way he agrees to that.

If there is no transfer/loan deal, and he doesn't agree to his release ,I dont see any way he can make the WC squad.
Which plays into the whole let him stay there this season and not mention his lack of fitness/health.

He wants to play in the World Cup. Not playing but collecting 2.7 mil is not in his best interest.

I'm sure they'd let him go on a free no problem (assuming the choice not to play him is an accurate reflection of what BVB think of him.) It's whether Reyna has anywhere to go that he'd be willing to take the salary hit.

My bet is that he is physically off - he is under contract - no one will pay his wages and BVB is just writing it off - only question I have is why they don’t put him with the reserve squad (is he too old for that now?) … they are on the hook and he does not want to forfeit the wages. So he is stuck and BVB is stuck. I think they want him in black and gold to help sell tickets during the CWC … I think he also knows he is not going to play in the WC or at all anymore for the USMNT. He has the talent but if the body is off and will not heal (lungs or some soft tissue somewhere) then he is done at a high level. That would explain the frustration on his face. Also explains why the coach says “I have a lot of players and I see them all in training. I understand alot of folks want this not to be true but I think we have another case of JOB. Hope Gio has some second career ideas - I bet UVA would be happy to enroll him given where his dad played.

They would have to buy out some percentage of his remaining salary. Unless Gio has a multi-million dollar buyer lined up, he would be foolish to walk from $2.7m

Maybe Poch said “he is not playing for his club and therefore he can’t play for the USMNT” … I bet Poch knows exactly what has occurred and is being respectful to Gio and the Reyna family by not commenting.

precisely - would you walk from $2.7M? I certainly would not if that is my best egg to start a second career.

I wonder if there is some contract clause that to fulfill the wage obligation that Gio has to show up every day and train. Even if he knows he is screwed. That would explain the frown on his face.

BVB II plays in the 3.Liga, so there are no roster rules that prevent him from playing there.

There very much is. Players are contractually obligated to show up to scheduled trainings, just like clubs are legally obligated to offer training facilities even if they have no interest in utilizing the player.

It sure looks to me like Gio has lost so much value that he his options are severely limited. His wages are too high for most top 5 league teams. The MLS seems likes the best option for me.... maybe AJAX or PSV in the Eredivisie?.... but I have lost faith. He has been "healthy" for BVB for so long w/o significant minutes which makes him look like a nobody in my eyes Dude needs to start over and prove that he can play top level football. If recent history is a significant indicator then I think the is nearing the "toast" label. I get why USMNT fans want to hang on to his initial talent queues but so much time has gone by with him being a nobody that I have nearly lost all faith in him. IMO, I don't care about his last name and how good he was 3 years ago. He has done NOTHING for 2+ years now for his club team. Right now I just see him as another guy w/ legit talent that never got close to approaching his ceiling. I wouldn't even list him in the top 5 of our creative MF right now.... Either his body can't hang or his brain/will can't. I would bet on him being done and dusted. IMO, a move to the MLS is the best he could expect.

and it might not happen for another year. I think he is out of consideration for now for USMNT.

I also would wait to put this all on Gio - if he has some health condition going on - there may be a reason for his drop in performance. He could be just stuck.

This was supposed to be the high ceiling player that would make the difference versus teams like France, Argentina, etc. To raise the ceiling of the program.
