It has been a matter of years now.

Gio needs to move to MLS. He shouldn’t travel back with Dortmund. Get NYCFC or Red Bull on the phone and get it done.

Tbf, the writing was on the wall with 3 months in the campaign left last season. I am shocked he is still there. It's not like he is suddenly going to be in favor with the manger and get PT, and clearly they are not putting him on display with minutes in order to sell.
One has to think the transfer/loan has to happen right after BvB exits this tourney, or we get the "contract terminated by mutual consent" line.

If they have no use for him in this tournament, then he likely wasn’t called in for the USMNT either.

He should call up Berhalter and see if he could get a role in Chicago. Berhalter put more trust in him than anyone else did, really. Time to make some changes.

so looks like Gio staying on the bench isn’t going to help much in the shop window.;)

My assumption has been that either the Fed assumed he wouldn't be released and didn't bother asking Dortmund OR Poch actually said, "I don't think Gio is among the best 60 players in the pool" and he was never getting called in this window. And I think the latter option is entirely plausible given that Poch didn't utilize Gio much the one time he's had him in the camp.

I also think that it's worth watching what happens to the Gittens / Chuk transfer sagas in the next week... if Dortmund make the knockouts, one of them is probably gone. Either Dortmund keeps Gittens and Chelsea lets Chuk's loan expire OR Gittens gets sold and Chelsea extend the loan / use him as part of the deal. Either way, it seems to me that Chuk took Gio's spot as the guy who subs in for Brandt.

I am surprised that he is even with BVB in this tourney - there is no point. The entire activity is a complete waste of time for him.

FIFA: How excited are you to take part in the Club World Cup?

Gio Reyna: Very excited. Playing on home soil with the (USA) national team or my club is always super-fun for myself and I’m looking forward to bringing some of the guys and the club over to (the area where I grew up) and show them a few things and answering their questions about my country. I’m just excited to play a tournament in front of my home fans.

Since he's been a waste of time for Dortmund for the last 2 seasons or so, it's a pretty fair exchange

He needs to leave, but the question is who (really) wants him. He simply hasn't shown anything like enough for at least two seasons to make him anything other than a roll of the dice for an acquiring club.

On a free, Reyna would be a reasonable gamble on a two-years-with-an-option deal. With a transfer fee, he isn't

Is he up for the physicality of MLS play, which is rather similar to England? The travel?

He will need to figure that out. The good thing about MLS is that he will find a club who will deploy him early and often, he’ll get the benefits of being around family/friends, and he has a built-in fanbase here. He’ll get minutes.

True. OTOH I didn't expect him to play in this game. Fluminense are no mugs and a loss had to be avoided, so the A-Team was going to be fielded.

He'll get some PT against the Koreans and South Africans. Which says it all, doesn't it?

I am not following your logic. You want a player whose problem is low activity levels, both intensity and volume, to go to teams which are the most activity on the planet? If he moves to MLS, which would be a huge mistake, he should go to Houston where he can join McGlynn walking around the pitch for 90 minutes!

New York City FC are the sprint kings in MLS, averaging 227.80 sprints per 90 in 2024. This would rank first in the Premier League this season, edging out Tottenham Hotspur (221.40) and Bournemouth (216.62) who are renowned for their high intensity football.

i think his presumption though is just that an MLS team would accept him and play him.

It is kind of nuts that this thread still gets so much traffic. Gio hasn't be good or even relevant for multiple years. We all hope he finds a good landing spot and gets back on track but the fact that so many BVB managers have found him wanting should temper expectations IMO. Heck... even in his brief cameos over the past two seasons there is nothing about the way he moves or plays that gives me a ton of optimism. He looks slow and lacks aggression. Some times players never fully recover from serious injuries and right now I think there is a high probability that he will never get back to his early form. Again, I would be tickled pink if he did but there is little to zero evidence that he will.
