Turkey had Kokcu and Kerem (Benfica) Hakan (Inter) Ozcan (dortmund) Guler (Madrid) Yildiz (Juventus). so seeing as Dortmund let players go for both Swiss and Turkish teams, I assume Gio was not called, or declined the call up for some reason. They had to release him if called and he accepted the call up.
I think what happened is Poch didn’t want Gio only for friendlies and not the Gold Cup, which is probably what Gio wanted. Maybe Poch found it too disruptive to play Gio for two friendlies but then lose him for Gold Cup.
It was a FIFA window they had no choice if the Federation pushed it. Poch told us before the last window that this would be his only chance to see Reyna this summer. He also made the statement something to the effect that Gio doesnt fit his system.
This is somewhat backed up by Pulisic's claim this morning on Golazo that he asked to play in the friendlies and was told no by the fed. He claims someone there (Poch, Crocker, etc) wanted one roster for the whole window. edit: the interview is still going as I type this, so I can't link to a time stamp, but his statement happened roughly 30 minutes ago, which would be around 7 minutes in:
If Poch wanted one roster for the whole window, and left our four best players out of the friendlies because of it (Pulisic, McKennie, Weah, and Reyna), then he made a dumb decision.
I don't agree with you much but you are absolutely spot on. Prepping for the Gold Cup and losing sight of the chance to prep for the World Cup was extreemly short sighted and maybe even negligent.
https://fansided.com/gio-reyna-left-off-usmnt-dortmund-bench-too The FIFA Club World Cup is coming to the United States this summer for its first edition in its new expanded format. Gio Reyna was not included in the USMNT roster for the Gold Cup as he is set to feature for Borussia Dortmund at the Club World Cup. However, Reyna has lacked game time for Niko Kovač's side recently, so it is uncertain how much we will see of him at the tournament. Speaking on a Zoom call, Kovač responded to a question about Reyna, saying, "Gio is a player of Dortmund since four or five years. He is a part of my team at the moment. Gio is for sure a player who didn't play so much, but we know exactly his strengths but we have top players here in the squad. So the confidence is very big, so hopefully every player can get minutes, but I can't promise you this is depending also on the results, also injuries, but my ambition is to give every player minutes. But this is always in relation to the results."
Kinda inflammatory headline for standard coach speak about a squad player. Again, I don't know that Gio starts any games, but I would be surprised if he ends the group stages with less than 30' of match time. The article notes Kovac is worried about jet lag, injuries, and heat, which implies that managing minutes will be one of Dortmund's bigger challenges. Between that and Gittens seemingly having one boot already in Stamford Bridge, I think Gio will see the field.
I do not think Gio has the mentality to be a top player, and certainly not the body. Still, he can have a respectable career. The rumors I am hearing are a possible transfer to Real Sociedad. I will believe it when i see it. He obviously needs to go to a club where he can play 90 minutes week in, week out. The level of the club is not as important as the playing time.
It's really a drag to see (not see) a guy with so much obvious talent not get on the field someplace. This is one of those instances where you just have to wonder about career management/advice. Sometimes this kind of stubborn belief in self pays off, but usually, when the writing on the wall is 10 chapters, footnotes and a second volume, you'd hope a player would do anything possible to find a place to show their stuff. I got no idea what goes on behind the scenes, but I really hope Gio can find some place to get games. He may not be "the guy" but he obviously has talent. Would love to see him use it someplace.
Given the prejudices of this board, where people largely care about players in regards to how their club career can help the National Team, it's kind of interesting that Gio's club career has been blighted almost exclusively due to injuries picked up on National Team duty. For those who have forgotten or never paid attention, here's Gio's club career in a nutshell.; Age 17-18 season: Favre makes him the starter. Gets off to a very good start (scores a goal in his 1st game, 3 assists in his 3rd game), his play drops off a bit starting in late October, he only starts intermittently from the New Year onwards. Has a overall good season, doesn't miss any significant time to injury. Age 18-19 season: Rose makes him the starter, scores a goal in 2 of the first 3 1.Bl games. First week of September goes on National Team duty against CONCACRAP sides that just go for his legs. Gets injured and is out until the beginning of February. Is slowly worked back into the side and then gets injured in the first week in April, which costs him the last 5 games of the 1.Bl season and forces him to spend the summer rehabbing. Age 19-20 season: Terzic is the manager and is not a fan of Gio. He's still rehabbing to start the season and doesn't get back in the team until late August. Gets intermittent minutes before the World Cup, is used as a sub in the second half of the season. Ends up with 7g 2a in 625 1.Bl minutes. Given that Terzic was staying as manager you thought he might get moved in the summer. Except: Plays for the National Team, in a game US was dominating a Canadian player deliberately goes for the back of his leg. Ends up being a hairline fracture which again forces him to rehab during the summer and not be ready for the beginning of the season. Age 20-21 season: Starts still injured from Nats duty, gets his first game time in early October. Plays random minutes. Takes a disastrously bad loan deal to Nottingham Forest at the winter break (which Dortmund dragged out to the last minute to squeeze money that by the time it was completed the players he was going to fill in for were already back from injury). Age 21-22 season: Finally starts a season injury free, Sahin in the manager and Reyna is not the starter. Goes on Nats duty at the beginning of September, gets injured, out for 2-1/2 months. Plays intermittently for the rest of the season under Sahin and then Kovac.
It'll be Mean Girls level of embarrassment if the rest of the squad come out in well tailored kit and Gio's the only one in maternity clothing.
Just read on Reddit that the team has to bring two sets of blank jerseys in case they make the knockouts, as the main shirt sponsor switches from Evonik to Vodafone on July 1st this tournament is filled with silly things.
