Dortmund can essentially guarantee a Champions League spot if they beat already-relegated Holstein Kiel by 2 or more goals next weekend.* That's quite a turnaround from where they were not that long ago, sitting in 11th less than 2 months ago.

*(Dortmund currently sit 5th, but the two teams directly above them, Frankfurt and Freiburg, play each other on the final matchday. A Frankfurt win or a draw means Dortmund would leapfrog Freiburg on points with a win, while a Freiburg win means that Dortmund would be level on points with Frankfurt with a win, needing only a 1 or 2 goal victory to be ahead of them on goal differential, depending on how many goals Frankfurt loses by.)

No its aimed at the casual USMNT fan the ones you have to explain why the big names are not in the roster for the friendlies during camp cupcake.

Come see your favorite American stars as they drink water on the bench and warm up before and after the match!

Not weird at all. Ad is aimed at the US market and there may be a chance that BVB take their starting players off the pedal a bit during this tournament allowing Reyna and a few others (like Gittens) to play if he hasn't been sold yet. This would also allow other clubs to see him play - hopefully inspiring a sale or at least negotiation talks.

This isn't some b.s. tournament. Its serious. They'll play their best guys if they're fit.

Maybe they are casual USMNT fans but big fans of a team not in the Bund and don't understand Gio's club situation. "OH cool I get to see Gio play".

I think it remains to be seen how seriously different clubs take the Club World Cup

We'll see. If BVB have the 4th spot locked up by tomorrow, their focus will be on the playoffs for the CL a month after.

I'm extremely confident Juve will be taking it pretty seriously, it would be the last chance for silverware. I'm pretty sure there is strong financial incentives to go as far as possible. After Madrid's embarrassment in the CL and La Liga, I'm sure they would like to win it. I'm sure Atleti, Chelsea, Bayern wouldn't mind taking it home as well. For the record, I don't think from the get-go teams will be playing their strongest 11, but it won't be a half and half of youngsters and first team players IMO.

The funniest thing ever would be him coming on and scoring the goal that gets them into the champions league. Realize the chances of him getting on if they only need a goal are just about zero…still….would be funny

Dortmund and Freiburg each lead 1-0 at halftime. Which means, at the moment, Dortmund are just barely on the outside looking in.

They just need to score one more goal to secure a spot. Alternatively, just one more goal (by either team, but no more than one goal) in the Freiburg-Frankfurt match will put Dortmund through, if the Dortmund score remains the same.

Has to be his last minutes played for BVB. From "American Dream" to "Not Playing for the Team".... It is time for a change.

I agree it should be. He is under contract, but if he isn't sold by the time the club World Cup starts would he be on their roster?
