Vazquez on in the 97th minute against Leon. Isais subbed on in the 79th just after Monterrey took the lead on a pen. Three red cards since then - very CONCACAFY tonight. Vazquez and friends up a man and 2-1 late.
Vazquez on in the 66th minute - quarterfinal first leg with UNAM Pumas. Scoreless tie. Ruvalcaba off at the same time Brandon came on.
Brandon’s (maybe offside) break opportunity behind the defense winds up with a blocked shot after an almost but not good enough cutback move. However, the loose ball falls to a teammate who gets fouled in the box, and/or the falling defender accidentally touches the ball with both hands. Either way, PK and a 1-0 win after Canales converts. Vazquez didn’t get a lot of chances to do much else.
I wonder if blusky links embed yet... anyway, Bogert is reporting that Vazquez is in preliminary talks with the revamped SJ Earthquakes. Also says other MLS teams are also interested in him: https://bsky.app/profile/tombogert.bsky.social/post/3lcnzxsyno22s
Vazquez subs on in the 82nd with the aggregate score at 3-3. Immediately, Monterrey benefit from an own goal and another three minutes later. Leading 5-3 aggregate very late (4-1 tonight).
He then scores a golazo from outside the box: 89' ⏱️| Monterrey 🤠5-1 San Luis |¡Qué gran gol de @Brvndonv!🔥¡Enorme definición, Supermán!🦸🏻♂️🦸🏻♂️🦸🏻♂️¡DALEEE! pic.twitter.com/JTNx8ZYCBJ— Rayados (@Rayados) December 8, 2024

Something does not smell right.. Monterrey is essentially throwing away a reported $7.5M transfer fee they paid for Vasquez. FC Cincy has to be pissed, too. They are also losing out on a sell-on fee. I’d rather see Vasquez head to Europe than San Diego but I get the draw play in your hometown. Win-win for SD if they don’t have to pay a transfer fee but doesn’t feel like a smart financial decision by Monterrey.
How many MLS -> Liga MX success stories have there been in the last 10 years? Cowell seems to be progressing well, but it rarely feels like the right move for a promising player.
You want what’s right for the player’s family, but Brandon won’t progress his career unless he goes to Europe. Competition at that position is really fierce right now. (I say this as someone who would love to be paid to play soccer in San Diego.)
Fake news, apparently. Sources: No, despite rumors, CF Monterrey have not terminated Brandon Vazquez's contract.I still expect BV to leave Rayados this winter but via a transfer, not as a free agent. We'll see.Vazquez signed for $7.5m last winter from FC Cincinnati. pic.twitter.com/NW4JBibuTd— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) December 31, 2024
new report suggests that he might actually be heading to Austin: 🚨Rayados tiene negociaciones avanzadas para vender a Brandon Vázquez a Austin FC. ⬇️https://t.co/YYC2MfuJxh pic.twitter.com/lndJ4GO9fL— César Luis Merlo (@CLMerlo) January 1, 2025 Merlo is extremely well respected for South American soccer news, not sure how he does for Central / North.
On Bluesky, Tom Bogert is reporting that Vazquez's return to MLS will be a club record fee for Austin, around $10m. BV will return to MLS as a DP. This also means that Monterrey will not be taking a loss from the move, which was rumored to be worth $7.5-$8.5m to FCC, depending on performance bonuses. https://bsky.app/profile/tombogert.bsky.social/post/3lezgho5qak2c That Fox Sports report was wildly inaccurate... from "mutual contract termination" to "making a $2m+ profit" in less than a week.
