Which one are you? http://futnsoccer.com/2012/07/11/types-american-soccer-fans/ Pretty cool infographic about the different types of soccer fans we tend to see in the US. Just done in jest.
I'd put myself in the 1st category, though I only pay attention to the USMNT during major tournaments. I'm not a "soccer fan" any more than I'm a "college football fan." I'm a "DC United fan" and a "Michigan Wolverines fan." I might watch an EPL game at the gym while on the threadmill, if there isn't anything else on.
Here's another group you could have. I'm going to call them Mature US fans. Age range mid 3os to mid 50s. Grew up playing soccer, and watching the NASL and Soccer Made in Germany. They remember the shot heard around the world from Trinidad. The follow the US national team and watch parts of the world cup. They went to indoor and outdoor games in the MISL, AISA, NPSL, A-League, USISL when that's all there was. They follow European and probably have favorite teams and they remember the Fox hightlight show as the big source of english coverage. They are MLS fans and go to games when they can. They are busy with their famlies, either coaching or watching their kids play.
That sounds like a subset of the True Fan, by the way, very impressed with your soccer credentials. I might do an infographic about the different types of true fans later on. Thx for the idea.
I'm not sure if I'm 1 or 5. I do watch the Champions League and the Premier League but they're not anything I follow religiously. I do pay close attention to every FIFA Tourney.
When the Metrostars first started I wanted them to do well. Some of my players played for them. The guys with my club did not think much of the MLS except Roberto Donadoni they love him, and so did I. Just wish he had stayed with the club. I used to call them my beloved Metrostars. But I feel nothing about the Red Bulls. I go to a game here and there, but the game they play to me at least is boring.
I'm an MLS fan. Even though I'm up-to-date on most leagues around the world I can't be bothered preaching the beautiful game to the non-believers, and actually prefer speaking to the non-believers about soccer, considering most soccer fans in the US are "Eurofan" types or "Casual US + Mostly Eurofan"and I'd quite legitimately like to punch them all in the face.
What are the policies that you don't like, and how do those policies affect your enjoyment of an MLS game?
I'm ok with the way the MLS is structured (no relegation/promotion) its still a young league and it helps strengthen the teams financially. However, I just HATE their youth systems, the MLS is trying to apply the football/baseball development method to soccer, which goes against what the rest of the world does. I think this hurts the quality of the MLS and the USMNT, because quality players have their progress retarded by playing College soccer instead of pro.
not a good list. i don't fall into any category. My first love is he USMNT. Everything else comes second. i follow the EPL, SPL, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A in that order. The champions league of course. I do not watch MLS.
I guess I'm a Eurofan. I love the USMNT. The World Cup 2006 & Premier League after that is what made me really get into the sport. And since then I'd like to think I've excelled from a pure bandwagon fan, into actually becoming pretty obsessed & knowledgable about Chelsea, probably moreso of the Pre-Abramovich era. I watch MLS whenever I see it on but wouldn't consider myself a fan --- mainly because I have no club to support. And while that's the case, I'll take the quality of the EPL over the MLS.
I never watch the Mexican league because it's neither here nor there (not one of the best leagues in the world or my local/domestic league). So I guess that rules out 5. I do watch most other brand of soccer so I don't belong on the first group either. I don't know where I belong.
I'm somewhere between Eurofan and true fan on that list. I consider myself a true fan, and I know and follow the MLS ... I am a former season ticket holder. But that being said, I have a strong preference for the Euro leagues, which are far more interesting and skilled.
I fall somewhere between MLS Fan (I want MLS to succeed and follow the USMNT), Euro fan (I'm more interested in what goes in Europe than in the US and my favorite club is in England), Casual fan (I play FIFA more often than I watch soccer, I think the sport could be improved in at least one of the ways mentioned, soccer is not my favorite sport). I don't really think I'm that atypical of American soccer fans I know.
When I did this infographic, I based off of people I know, and then kind of took it to an extreme in order to make 5 separate descriptions. Of course, most people will be a combo of the 5 types. I watch alot of soccer, and I also play countless hours of Fifa and Football Manager...
Yet you feel as though you can comment on it, make assumptions, argue against it, and generally poo poo it .... even though you don't even watch it and have anything to base your bullshit off of.
This is fairly accurate. I'm a fan of USMNT #1/MLS #2/Europe #3. However, if I'm trying to get friends into the beautiful game I'll have them watch the world cup and europe to see what the game should be, then take them to a game in Seattle, Portland, or Vancover to see what the atmosphere should be like.
