Confirmation that we shouldn’t always ask “How?”

    “How many?” still super important.

Good question. I watch him a few times, and nothing he says was of any substance. I suppose he is there to give a USA prospective of a given play. "Was that a penalty?" Mexican commentator asks, Balboa replies "I'm not sure, but I don't want the game to be decided on a penalty play [a few seconds later], but it is a penalty".

I'd never heard the name in France or Canada so I looked into it a bit ago - from what I could tell it appears it's most likely a Cameroonian name given a French spelling, fwiw. But there's probably folks out there know better than what I could glean on-line.

(I mostly based this conclusion on the fact that nearly every Siebatcheu I found listed on-line or linkedin was connected to Cameroon, but the spelling is clearly some kind of French language construction.)

I have a different theory: I think it was originally the German surname “Siebenschuh” which is not common but not completely unheard of. My guess is that it was eventually Gallicized in Cameroon, likely sometime after Cameroon switched from being a German colony to a French colony.

Very plausible. For sure I have not found a lot of Siebatcheu's in France or Franco-Canada (and those I have seem to have Cameroonian roots). It also doesn't seem to be super common in Cameroon either, but I'd guess it has some origin similar to the above. I wonder if there are other Siebenschuh's in Namibia or the few other places Germany colonized in Africa.

    Wow! This commentator.

First he says it is a "miss hit" then he says "he is a substitute and not really up to the speed of the game"

Hilarious. Not sure how it's a mishit as he throws his body at it and puts it on frame exactly where he wanted to - because he kind of hits it into the ground? Nothing wrong with that in the situation.

And to say he's not up to the speed of the game? The guy who literally just out-reacted everyone to the loose ball to win the game? Could you spare a tiny compliment?

He even blamed the wrong United player first. It's really an amazing minute of announcing mistakes. An MLS team should hire him.

I watched the game live. “You don’t like to see forwards back there”. Listen closely. The commentator was talking about Lingard as the substitute not Pefok. He’s saying Lingard had no business being in that area to even send a back pass. Lingard was poor - not just in that sequence - in his 17 minute appearance. He looked lost. The commentator mentioned that a few times about Lingard.

Ah yes, you are correct with the speed of play comment.

...But i still think he's saying Pefok mishit it.

He does say “mishit” but what I think he means is that Pefok didn’t hit it cleanly which he didn’t. But he got enough of the ball to put it away. I think that’s all he’s saying. Not a great choice of wording but I really don’t think the commentator meant “mishit” in the way we think. Efan Ekoku is a pretty well respected commentator but all sorts of things are being missed these days since they are in studio and not onsite for these matches. The are calling the game off monitors and different angles than we see. They don’t have a spotter calling out names. It makes a big difference.

That's not surprising. They're playing a team called Illiria Solothurn, which is an ethnic team aimed at bringing immigrants from Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia together in na foreign land, They're non-league and almost certainly completely amateur.

Wagner will be playing the second string in this one

6-0 at 6.45 pm local time.

Is that 6-0 at half-time? :sneaky:

    Christ, I was only snarking!

    P.S.
FWIW Solothurn is the capital of the canton of Solothurn. It has a population of 17k and the canton has 275k in total. An ethnic team in a small town in a small canton is going to be entirely amateur. This could be a blowout of epic proportions
