Again, he legit asked us as broadcasters to refer to him as Pefok. FYI.— Jenny Chiu (@jennyachiu) September 14, 2021 When he scored against Honduras, I asked him directly. He said his first name could be Theoson, Jordan or Jordy. But “for soccer” his last name is “PEFOK”His Twitter name is literally: CALL ME PEFOK in all caps lol @Theosonsmith https://t.co/nTBTHE9Y8W— Nico Cantor (@Nicocantor1) September 14, 2021
I was happy for Jordan Pefok, but I was even happier for David Wagner, who suffered a lot at Huddersfield and Schalke, did not get the recognition he deserves, and now finally has the reins at a good club. Go David! Note: David Wagner had 8 caps under Steve Sampson
It’s like Churchill’s epigraph about the Soviet Union. A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.
Why would anyone not use Jordan Pefok? It’s so simple to say. Theoson Siebatcheu is a mouthful. It’s sooooooo easy to butcher. I still can’t say it right. For a while I quit trying to attempt it. I was so happy when he went with Jordan Pefok. Commentators are dumb. They make their job harder sometimes
see - ayyyy (ala Fonzie) - buh - chew it ain't hard That said, he wants pefok... and i ain't gonna fok with that... It's the PeFok era Fok'd out with a gangsta twist
I also just have a strong preference for calling people what they ask to be called. If they make it their all caps twitter name, all the better. Really happy for him today. I hope he has many more, bigger career highlights, but chances are this is one he'll never forget. And so happy for David Wagner too, whom I think does have managerial chops.
This has to be in all his thread titles from now on. E.g. It's the Pefok Era: Theoson-Jordan (Siebatcheu) Pefok at BSC Young Boys.
Marcelo Balboa on TUDN keeps calling him "Jordan Peacock." The funny part is that nobody corrects him.
You say Pefok, I say Siebatcheu, let's call the whole thing off. Pefok is his mother's maiden name. "For his international debut he decided to use his mother's maiden name on his jersey and not his father's last name. His mom has African origins so he feels proud to represent part of his culture. Siebatcheu was born in Washington D.C. and that is why he was eligible to play for the United States men’s national team. This is not the first time he uses his mother’s last name, Pefok, in his jerseys because uses it in his club team as well." https://en.as.com/en/2021/03/30/soccer/1617069215_443972.html
His Spanglish is bad on Telemundo, too. He's caught between two worlds. Better than being caught between two peacocks.
If he wasn't a former NT player they would never have hired him to be a commentator. His mastering of the Spanish language is poor.
I had a colleague once with a genuinely unpronounceable Ukrainian family name. His attitude to people mangling it was "you can call say it any way you want, as long as you do it with a smile".
He didn't really have a full season last season with Young Boys as he did not become a regular until winter. In slightly over 2500 minutes of league & European play (essentially a season's worth of minutes or close to it) since joining Young Boys last year, he has 22 goals and 6 assists, including 4 goals against Leverkusen or Man Utd. Probably not the USMNT's #1 striker but he has a deserved place in the 23.
Jordan Pefok’s teammates knew he’d scored, that they started celebrating before he even shot the ball 😅 pic.twitter.com/DI8UlmYcUB— Relevent Sports (@releventsports) September 15, 2021
