Freddy Adu seems like a pretty clear cut case of burnout, no? Played a ton before he turned 20, and then barely played after that? That can't be the norm for a phenom.
To stand any chance of graduating from academy football to a top European side’s first team, young players need to be gifted both athletically and technically. A player whose physical development occurs earlier than his peers can flatter to deceive. His peers may catch up with him as they get stronger and faster. Most of us probably remember Yaya Sanogo, who was a prime example of someone who excelled in the youth ranks because he was bigger and stronger than his peers, but never had the technical skill to succeed at Arsenal. Admittedly I haven’t seen more than a couple of highlights of Chido Martin, but his dominance at the youth level suggests he might be in this category. United have gambled on his technical development. Based on the video in the link that maskito provided, Dowman already appears to have a very good skill set. The question for him is whether his physical development, as he ages, will allow him to compete with grown men. With limited information, given a choice of which one to keep I would choose the more technical player.
He was introduced at Genoa today. He gone. He wasn’t right for us, but he is going to have a good career for a decent sized club, imo.

Random, out of left field theory: Could Nwaneri possibly be responsible for the delay in the Merino transfer? If Arteta believes Nwaneri is ready to get minutes at the left 8 on a rotational basis, buying Merino would block those minutes. On the ball he may already be Merino’s equal, so the question would become Arteta’s evaluation of his off the ball work.
So do I, but the Merino transfer has dragged on for so long I offered a wild theory. If Wenger were still in charge I’d give my theory a little more credence, but with Arteta there is probably a less than 1% chance that’s the reason the transfer is taking so long.
Merino was dropped from the match day squad, he is definitely on his way. And this year we aren't the only team making slow/no transfers.
Deals get done on deadline day in a matter of hours, it doesn't take this long. If the fee ends up near the €35m that Sociedad want, my guess is Arsenal spent 3 weeks trying to find a better alternative and gave up.
Due diligence....yawn. Easy hours though, as a newbie associate back in the day if you got roped into one of those types of doc reviews.
Like actual responsibility? I'm curious. We'll get 3rd years interning some times for us, and they don't know jack. I shudder to think of them getting real responsibility as a first year associate.
It varies by firm and practice, but when I was a first year (and this was a while ago now), I basically had to draft and shepherd three MSJs over the line in a little over a month, then had to put together fairly complex trial direct testimony, and then had to prep those witnesses for cross. The days where you'd have associates do nothing but doc review for three years are long gone. Assuming that, by third years you mean 3Ls, and you're right - they really don't know anything. But motivated first year associates can learn a lot really, really fast - the combination of lots of caffeine, long hours, and not having a life can do wonders for one's career.
Good to know. I left my first job at big mega firm after two years because I wasn't getting the litigation experience I wanted (although I did do a lot of motions drafting). Went to medium size mega firm and immediately got thrown into depos, trial prep, even appellate work. And that firm was better about giving first years more responsibility----but I'm not sure it was as much as you describe. True. And while I miss some aspects of litigation. I don't miss big firm life. And yeah, I'll stop now-----although these posts were technically about youth.
