I thought this was pretty cool, although probably very incomplete. What do you think the world would look like if humanity disappeared from it?

So. the only thing that will survive after all life is gone and even the earth is gone will be...

    ...radio and tv programming.

    How depressing.

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it...

Most plastics would be gone in less than 100 years.

BTW, dinosaurs went extinct becaue of a nuclear war started by the intelligent dinosaurs. That's what I tell my kids, anyway.

I would feel bad for my cats. No one to open their canned food.

Who would make the porn?

Actually, I'm very interested in reading this guy's book. Fascinating point of view.

I'm convinced there's enough porn on the internet to last 20 lifetimes. There's no need to make more.

I'm almost through the book. It's a quick and fascinating read, and he doesn't make too much of any given conclusion. Weisman approaches the subject as his training dictates--he is a journalist, not a scientist--so he doesn't reach far up his own ass like many other writers of the popular science genre.

And he does have a bit on housecats, specifically as they relate to birds.

Personally I found the book interesting as a world where humans suddenly disappear has often been one of my sort of mantras on extended solo backpacking trips (which is a bit hard to explain, but if you've ever been in the woods for more than a few days without seeing another human, you probably know what I mean).

And a little plaque on the moon. I think I read somewhere that Richard Nixon was the only truly immortal person in human history because of that.

EDIT - oh, wait, no, I didn't realize we were taking the LONG view.

Maybe there's something on Voyager or one of the other space probes.
